San Marcos council to hear update on new city hall project

After four years of progress in reviewing concepts, funding and potential locations, the council will hear an update on the city hall development project on June 16 during a work session.

The gist: The Hopkins City Center/New City Hall project includes the development of a new city hall building and enhancements to the Hopkins Street corridor, according to the city of San Marcos website.

The project is still in the early stages of development. Project progress will be communicated as it continues, and there will be opportunities for community engagement and feedback.

The project’s Steering Committee received a project update that included conceptual designs for a relocated facility in the city’s downtown area. The proposed site is located at the corner of Hopkins Street and CM Allen Parkway and not currently owned by the city, according to agenda documents.

The breakdown: City staff projects that the development of the new city hall and associated parking will cost between $80 million and $100 million.

Hays County expands access to mental health resources in partnership with CredibleMind

Local residents have greater access to personalized mental health resources through a new partnership between Hays County and a digital platform called CredibleMind.

The specifics: The Hays County Health Department announced its partnership with the platform June 4. CredibleMind offers localized, wellness-oriented digital content that allows employees, insurers, health care providers and community organizations to provide personalized mental health resources. The partnership enables the platform to serve as a digital resource for the county’s growing population of over 300,000 residents.

A closer look: CredibleMind focuses on enabling early intervention and prevention of mental health issues. The platform offers more than 10,000 resources to help users find credible self-care options and improve their overall well-being without medical intervention, according to the release.

The conditions: “Our community members deserve accessible and efficient ways to find resources that support their wellbeing,” Matthew Gonzales, Hays County Health Department director, said in the release.

UT Austin selected as southern hub for national semiconductor workforce initiative

The University of Texas at Austin will be the south node of a national workforce development program to connect job seekers with educational opportunities and employers in the semiconductor industry. 

The university announced its selection to lead part of the national effort June 9.

What you need to know: UT's Texas Institute for Electronics will lead the south node of the National Network for Microelectronics Education, which is operated at the national level by the SEMI Foundation. The nonprofit supports workforce growth in the microelectronics industry, which includes semiconductors.

About the program: NNME South will bring together industry employers, K-12 and higher education partners to bridge the gap between available semiconductor industry jobs and the workforce by establishing new pipelines and programs. Not only will these target students, but also veterans and those looking to reskill for a career change. In the program's first year, it will focus on making pathways to careers in the industry more visible, aligning job training with industry needs, expanding training opportunities and connecting to diverse talent pools.
