Sugar Land approves new animal shelter site at Imperial Park

Sugar Land is moving forward with a new site for its animal shelter.

What you need to know: At an Aug. 4 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a resolution to change the land use of approximately 3 acres at Imperial Park for the construction of the city’s new animal shelter facility.

The site selection comes after a comprehensive study ordered in May 2024 to find the optimal location for the new animal shelter due to growing community needs, Assistant City Engineer Jonathan Braun said.

The details: Imperial Park—which is located at 7750 Hwy. 90A—was selected due to its convenient access and visibility, having a lower flood risk, pedestrian-friendly access and its distance from residential areas, Braun said.

About the shelter: The new 26,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor facility will be suited to accommodate 80 dogs and 122 cats, Community Impact previously reported.

Vino & Vinyl to expand in Sugar Land Town Square

Vino & Vinyl Supper Club will undergo an expansion in Sugar Land Town Square, officials confirmed.

What’s happening: The eatery has leased the space next door to its original location with plans to add a new bar, dining room and private dining room, Managing Partner Craig Adams said.

There will also be renovations to the building’s facade and outdoor patio. However, the restaurant will remain open during construction.

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere: Vino & Vinyl also recently acquired a permit to sell mixed beverages alongside its wide selection of wine and beer options, Adams said.

What to know about tax-free weekend in Texas, Aug. 7-9

Ahead of the 2026 school year, the Texas Comptroller’s Office encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases on most clothing and school supplies during the annual tax-free weekend from Aug. 7-9. 

What you need to know: A variety of school supplies and clothing items can be purchased from a Texas store or an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, exemption certificates are not required to buy qualifying items tax free, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office. 

Qualifying items include:

  • Footwear 
  • School supplies
  • Face masks

85K students will use new Texas Education Freedom Accounts this school year

At least 85,000 students will use Texas' new education savings accounts during the 2026-27 school year, an Aug. 3 report shows. Enrollment may grow as the school year kicks off and more families opt in to the program.

The overview: The Texas Education Freedom Accounts program gives families state funds to send their children to private schools or homeschool them, with priority going to students with disabilities and children from low-income households.

About 24% of students participating in the TEFA program have a disability, according to state data, and 80% of participants are from low-income families.

Zooming in: The largest numbers of students participating in the program live in Texas’ largest school districts, data shows. The report lists that 3,327 participants live in Houston ISD’s boundaries, followed by 2,645 participants from Dallas ISD, 2,271 participants from Northside ISD and 2,024 participants from Fort Bend ISD.

Previous state data showed that about 43% of students selected for the program had previously attended a Texas public school, although the Aug. 3 report did not include that information.
