Munchies Locos sells authentic Mexican treats in New Braunfels

What started off as a pop-up business selling only aguas frescas slowly transformed into a food truck serving delicious, authentic Mexican snacks.

Some details: Juanita Rocha, a native of New Braunfels, opened Munchies Locos in 2023.

She said they used to be a bit more mobile by doing pop-ups at neighborhoods, apartments and events until she decided that she needed to have a permanent location. Before becoming Munchies Locos, Rocha was known as “Aguuitas muy frescas y más.”

“My aguas frescas was my signature, and I started adding corn in a cup, nachos, mangonadas, snow cones, and I was like, ‘I can’t just be Aguuitas’ I need to see what I can come up with because now I’m not just offering aguas frescas, I’m offering a lot more,” Rocha said.

Comal Card Haus offers community through card playing in New Braunfels

When Joey Ashley isn’t coaching men’s golf for the University of Texas at San Antonio, he and his wife, Cat Osterman, who is also a former Olympic softball pitcher, are running a poker house.

The backstory: Ashley, who began playing poker in 2019, learned the business through being a customer. After a year of driving to San Antonio and Austin to play, Ashley and Osterman began kicking around the idea of opening their own poker house.

Ashley had been a high school math teacher for 13 years. For him, poker is more than just playing cards; it’s a game of calculating odds and variables.

“It’s much more of a skill game compared to somebody playing a casino game like a blackjack or a roulette or a slot machine, which is just luck,” he said.
