At the upcoming Sept. 9 regular meeting, the Willis ISD  board of trustees is set to review multiple agenda items concerning district purchases, construction updates and educational reports for the upcoming school semester. 

On the agenda: WISD will review multiple agenda items concerning construction projects within the district, two of these items concerning two delivery methods for flooring and roof replacements. 

WISD will also consider approving new school bus equipment purchases and 3 new fuel tankers at the new WISD transportation center. Sue Clardy, WISD executive director of continuous improvement and accountability, will also present to the board an update on the district's Lone Star Governance plan. 

WISD Chief Financial Officer Garrett Matej will also provide a financial update ot the board. Afterwards, Bob Eaton, WISD Chief of Construction and Operations, will present a report on a cost-savings bond and capital project update.

One last thing: The regular board meeting will be held Sept. 9 at the Willis ISD Boardroom; attendees can view the official agenda here.

Candidates Jessica Hart Steinmann and Laura Jones are slated to face off in November’s general election for a seat in the U.S. House.

What you need to know: The district covers parts of Harris and Montgomery counties, where U.S. Rep. Morgan Luttrell, R-Texas, who has served two terms, announced he would not seek re-election last year. That left the ballot open for Steinmann and Jones, who faced opponents in the March primary election. Steinmann received the Republican nomination, and Jones, the Democratic.

One more thing: Early voting begins Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 30, according to the Texas Secretary of State's website. Election day is Nov. 3 and polls will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

For the first time in over a decade, there is no incumbent in the Texas attorney general's race as Republican Ken Paxton runs for U.S. Senate.

Democrat Nathan Johnson, a state senator from Dallas; Republican Mayes Middleton, a state senator from Galveston; and Libertarian Tom Oxford, an attorney from Nederland, are running to replace him this November. Community Impact asked the candidates for their perspectives on Texas' open records laws, state litigation and other topics.

How we got here: Johnson and Middleton each won their primary runoff elections in May, Community Impact reported, while Oxford was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Looking ahead: Early voting in eight statewide races and dozens of local elections runs from Oct. 19-30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
