Contract for future static, 3D archery facility under consideration in Round Rock

Round Rock residents may soon have a new city-owned archery facility near Mayfield Ranch.

What you need to know: A contract to build the first phase of both static and 3D archery facilities at Mayfield Park is under consideration by the Round Rock City Council. With a price tag of $190,559, the first phase would be funded by the city's general self-financed construction budget and park improvement and acquisition fund, city documents show. The contract would be with TerraSol LLC.

The details: The project's scope includes constructing a gravel parking lot, grading associated with the archery lanes, and an accessible parking space and accessible route to both the static and 3D archery lanes.

Parks & Recreation Director Rick Atkins said in a May 12 packet briefing the 3D range will include a walking path through a wooded area, and the facility itself will be accessible with mobile technology. Residents will bring their own equipment, he said, and will likely need to purchase an annual use permit for each person entering it.

Furniture purchase for Athletic Performance Center under consideration in Round Rock as construction continues

Commercial-grade furniture for a city project under construction in Round Rock is on the City Council's agenda for May 14.

Current situation: City officials will consider a $960,999 contract to furnish the future Athletic Performance Center in Old Settler's Park. Round Rock Parks & Recreation Director Rick Atkins said in a May 12 packet briefing that the center is expected to staff 17 to 19 additional city employees, and relocate about 50 existing Parks & Recreation Department employees from the city's McConico building downtown.

About the project: The project was included in the city's 2023 bond package, and was planned to cost about $91.1 million to build, according to the city.

Construction on the Athletic Performance Center, part of the park’s recreation center complex, began in summer 2025 and is anticipated to be finished in spring 2027, city documents show. The facility is planned to include an indoor gym, an outdoor track and multipurpose fields, along with additional parking and administrative space for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Q&A: Catch up with the Republicans running for Texas railroad commissioner in the May 26 runoff

On May 26, Republican voters will choose their nominee for the Texas Railroad Commission in a runoff election between former Tarrant County GOP Chair Bo French and incumbent Jim Wright.

The overview: The Republican railroad commission race is one of several statewide contests that advanced to May runoffs after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary election.

Wright and French were the two highest-performing candidates in the five-way primary race, with Wright receiving 32.1% of the vote and French collecting 31.7%.

The winner of the May 26 overtime round will face state Rep. John Rosenthal, D-Houston, in the November midterm election. Third-party candidates may also appear on the November ballot.

Did you know? The railroad commission regulates Texas’ oil and gas industry, while the state's railroads are under the control of the Texas Department of Transportation and the federal government. The agency has three commissioners elected to staggered six-year terms.

At the polls: Texans can vote early from May 18-22, with runoff election day May 26.
