New Braunfels housing development faces setback as rezoning motion fails

The future of a proposed New Braunfels housing development is up in the air after a motion to rezone 38 acres for a new subdivision failed 3-2 on March 23.

Council members Michael Capizzi and April Ryan, and Mayor Neal Linnartz voted to approve the rezoning, while Council members Toni Carter and Mary Ann Labowski dissented. Mayor Pro Tem Lawrence Spradley was absent, and Council member D. Lee Edwards recused himself from the item, as he is a party involved in the potential sale of the property, city officials said.

What happened: Killen, Griffin & Farrimond, the firm representing the proposed property developer KB Home, requested a postponement of at least 45 days to determine the best way to address public concerns discussed during a planning commission meeting Feb. 3, said Ashley Farrimond, a lawyer with Killen, Griffin & Farrimond.

The motion for postponement failed, which forced City Council to vote on the rezoning, according to state law.

Watering Hole Saloon & Dancehall to celebrate 40 years in New Braunfels

A local live music venue is getting ready to celebrate a big milestone in New Braunfels this summer.

Watering Hole Saloon & Dancehall is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a weekend celebration from June 18-21. Owner Holly Allen said the event will include a variety of festivities, from live music to giveaways.

The history: Allen said her parents—Bob and Shirley Saulle—opened the venue in 1986, which, at the time, was only a 900 square-foot icehouse.

“That’s how it started,” Allen said. “My parents added the big dancehall in 1991.”

Live music was performed in the dancehall until the mid-1990s until it was replaced by live DJ sets. However, live music returned to the saloon in 2014, Allen said.

“We wanted to get a bunch of new people in here,” she said. “This place was built for live music.”
