Dripping Springs Community Library hits the road

Hays County residents now have increased access to library programming as the Dripping Springs Community Library unveils a new Library on Wheels.

Latest update: The DSCL partnered with the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Library on Wheels at Deep Eddy Vodka Tasting Room on April 23.

According to previous reporting by Community Impact, the Library on Wheels will offer:

  • STEM labs

  • Story times

  • Cultural programs

  • Books

  • Technology

In addition to the Library on Wheels, the DSCL is raising funds for a new facility as the organization and community have outgrown the current space.

“As we work towards our new building, we are going to make sure that we're able to continue to expand services now, and that's what this vehicle does,” Laird said. “It starts now.”

Going forward: Laird said the team plans to conduct three stops per week this year and to expand programming in the future.

Council advances incentive deal for nearly $1B Circuit of the Americas resort

Austin leaders advanced a city incentive deal for a $985 million resort project at Circuit of the Americas this spring that's expected to add hundreds of jobs and generate billions of dollars in the local economy.

The details: RIDA Development is planning a 1,000-room hotel with a golf course and 170,000-square-foot conference center on the western portion of the COTA project in Del Valle. A 30-year economic development agreement between Austin and RIDA proposed this spring would see the city reimburse a portion of the hotel occupancy tax, or HOT, generated by the resort once it's operating.

The project's construction is expected to create nearly 4,000 temporary jobs, while the resort will support about 900 permanent jobs and indirectly create hundreds more. The city deal would also see RIDA contribute public parkland and soccer fields, pay into Austin's affordable housing fund and offer resort discounts for local residents. It was widely supported before City Council advanced negotiations over the proposal April 23.

140-year-old Lammes Candies closes Round Rock shop, Austin location to follow

Austin-based Lammes Candies closed its Round Rock storefront April 24, with the flagship store on Airport Boulevard in Austin to follow soon, according to the business.

About the business: Family-owned candy manufacturer and seller Lammes has operated in the Austin area since it opened in 1885, according to the company. The candy company is known for a specialty praline made with Texas pecans as well as chocolates, taffies, brittles and other treats.

What they're saying: The closure comes as the company works to wind-down its operations, and the Austin store will remain open for "a bit longer."

"The decision comes after careful consideration of changing market conditions and the long-term sustainability of our operations," a notice posted for customer view states. "It was not made lightly. Lammes Candies has always been more than a business, it has been a family legacy, and a part of so many lives and celebrations."
