Pearland hires Freese & Nichols for project aimed at reducing runoff into city’s sewer system

The Barry Rose and Longwood wastewater treatment plants’ service basins will undergo new upgrades to reduce rain and groundwater from leaking into the city’s sewer system.

What happened: Pearland City Council voted unanimously at its Nov. 10 meeting to award a $2.1 million design contract to Pearland-based engineering consultant Freese & Nichols for the project. The firm will conduct flow monitoring, closed-circuit television inspections, smoke testing and manhole condition assessments across the two basins.  

Looking ahead: Design work is expected to begin in late 2025, and construction bidding is anticipated to begin by the end of the year, according to city documents.

Pearland ISD AP, CTE teachers eligible for incentive pay

Advanced placement and career and technology education teachers at Pearland ISD could be eligible for incentive pay after the board of trustees approved the measure at its Nov. 11 meeting.

What you need to know: The AP merit pay program is determined by:
Exam participation
Passing rates in comparison to state and global passing rates
Individual student scores

PISD will allocate $200,000 through its general fund for the AP merit pay program. 

Also of note: The CTE incentive pay program is geared toward improving student participation that leads to industry certifications.

The district is allocating $50,000 through its general fund for the CTE incentive pay program.

Enchanted Chapters brings mobile bookstore pop-ups across Greater Houston

A new mobile bookstore is rolling into communities across Greater Houston, offering readers a joyful way to shop, owner Christie Hopson said.

A closer look: Enchanted Chapters hosts weekend pop-up events at breweries, festivals and other local gatherings, Hopson said. The mobile bookstore carries a variety of genres from romance to fantasy, thriller, mystery and children's books.

For November, Enchanted Chapters will appear at events in Cypress, Tomball, Seabrook, Katy and Conroe. Hopson said the goal is to bring the joy of discovering books directly to readers.

Check out these new restaurants and bars opening across the Houston area.

Killer Burger is the home of the Peanut Butter Pickle Bacon Burger, a unique combination that includes a grilled patty, bacon, peanut butter sauce, mayo, grilled onions and pickles.

According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the project will include converting a 2,500-square-foot space in Sawyer Heights Village into the new restaurant.
