San Marcos recommends recipients for portions of a $740K housing grant

The San Marcos City Council on April 7 weighed in on the allocation of $740,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding to be put toward public service programs and projects.

Selected programs benefit citizens with low and moderate incomes or aim to “eliminate slums or blight,” according to previous Community Impact reporting.

The overview: City staff presented recommendations to council for the amount of CDBG funding each should receive during the meeting.

No more than 15% of the grant, or $111,000, can be spent on public services and no more than 20%, or $148,000, can be spent on staff administering the grant. The remaining grant funds may be spent on projects.

Looking forward: City staff will publish a draft action plan for the funding allocations May 5, after which the community will have 30 days to comment and provide feedback. City Council will then consider a final grant allocation July 7.

Kolache bakery gears up for third store in San Marcos

A bakery with two San Marcos locations and one spot in New Braunfels is preparing for a fourth store.

The gist: Dos Gatos Kolache Bakery was established in 2009 by local business owner Chase Katz. The eatery sells homemade Czech kolaches and coffee at three existing spots. Katz hopes to open his business’s fourth location by the end of the year.

“We feel like that side of town is kind of underserved, and doesn't have a great option for coffee,” Katz said. “We're gonna have dine-in and drive-thru, and we feel like that would be good for the community on that side of town.”

Katz has been in San Marcos for 21 years. He opened the first Dos Gatos Kolache Bakery because the city did not have a Czech-style kolache option at the time.

Next steps: While Katz is in the process of developing the new eatery, he said it may take over a year to officially open.

San Antonio Board of Realtors and Four Rivers Association of Realtors look to merge

The San Antonio Board of Realtors and Four Rivers Association of Realtors announced in an April 14 news release that they formally approved and signed a strategic merger agreement.

What it means: The organizations are looking to amplify advocacy efforts at a local and state level, expand education and professional development opportunities and increase networking and regional collaboration. The merger would expand the association’s coverage across a larger geographic area and create new opportunities to enhance member services, the release states.

Next steps: The proposed merger is pending approval by both organizations. Once details related to governance structure, operational planning and finances are finalized, a general membership meeting will be held with members of SABOR and Four Rivers AOR. Then, those members will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed merger, the release states. If approved, the National Association of Realtors will need to ratify the merger agreement for the merger to become official.
