City of Humble sees roughly 49% year-over-year drop in auto theft cases

The city of Humble saw a roughly 49% drop in auto theft cases from 2024 to 2025 after officials implemented the use of Flock cameras throughout the city, interim Police Chief Kris Battenfield said during a March 12 City Council meeting.

The details: Battenfield said the police department saw the number of auto theft cases processed through the city drop from 187 cases in 2024 to 95 cases in 2025.

What they’re saying: Battenfield said he believes the installation of Flock cameras, which scan license plates to help identify vehicles, directly contributed to the drop in auto theft cases.

“When we look at the calls coming in daily, the bad guys are getting caught on these cameras,” Battenfield said. “They're getting caught coming into the city. They're getting caught leaving the city. The bad guys know these cameras are out there.”

Mayor Norman Funderburk touted the drop in auto theft cases, as well as a roughly 15% drop in property crimes.

After 10 years as Bayou Land Conservancy’s executive director, Jill Boullion reflected on her time spent in leadership and the progress the conservancy has made over the years. According to its website, the conservancy works to preserve land along streams for better flood control, clean water and wildlife.

You’ve been the executive director at the Bayou Land Conservancy for the past 10 years. What motivated you to pursue your role?

“Before I came here, I was at the Greens Bayou Coalition. I had spent all my career in marketing and advertising, so it was kind of like getting to take all the experience and skills I had built up over all that time and put them into something I was passionate about."

What do you wish more people knew about the Bayou Land Conservancy?
A lot of people don't realize where we get our support and what makes us run. A big part of what we do is connecting people with nature so that we're a sustainable organization.

Statewide News
Applications for new Texas education savings accounts close Tuesday, March 17

Families have until 11:59 p.m. March 17 to apply for the first year of Texas’ education savings account program, according to the state comptroller’s office.

The big picture: Under the $1 billion program, participating students will receive state funds for private education or homeschooling during the 2026-27 school year. It is unlikely that all applicants will be accepted, as application data shows more students have applied than the program can fund.

The program offers $2,000 to homeschooled students; $10,474 for private school tuition and related expenses; and up to $30,000 for students with disabilities. With demand set to exceed available funding, applications will be prioritized based on need and household income.

How we got here: State lawmakers created the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program in 2025, with proponents saying it will expand options for families who don't want to send their children to public schools. Critics of the program have said it will unfairly benefit students already in private schools and divert funding from public schools.
