Richardson ISD students will soon be able to explore careers, finances and business in a hands-on environment at the district’s new Biztown.

The overview: JA Biztown is part of the newly opened experiential learning facility JA Discovery Center at Greenwood Hills Learning Center, the result of a partnership between RISD and Junior Achievement of Dallas. The organizations hosted a ribbon cutting for the center Aug. 27 and the facility will be open to students Sept. 15.

The details: Junior Achievement of Dallas provides hands-on financial literacy, career readiness and entrepreneurship programming to students across North Texas. JA Biztown, which was unveiled at the ribbon cutting, will provide business finance programming for fifth graders. JA Finance Park will open in the spring to offer personal finance education to seventh graders.

Quote of note: “Junior Achievement and Richardson ISD came together and asked a simple question: What if we could give students a place where they don’t just learn about their future, but they actually experience it?” Junior Achievement of Dallas CEO Chris LaTurno said.

A new HomeGoods location is now open in the Richardson Heights shopping center.

The details: The store offers a variety of home decor, furniture, kitchen items, bedding and other household items.

Voters will choose between two candidates for the Texas House District 33 position this Nov. 3 election.

What you need to know: Republican incumbent Katrina Pierson is running against Democratic candidate Orlando Lopez. Texas House District 33’s representative serves residents in all of Rockwall, parts of Plano, Richardson, Murphy, Sachse, Wylie, Heath, Fate, McLendon-Chisholm, Rowlett and Dallas.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa, an Austin state representative, and Libertarian Pat Dixon, a professional engineer, are challenging Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in the Nov. 3 election. Abbott is seeking a fourth term in the governor's mansion.

The big picture: As Texas’ top elected official, the governor signs and vetoes legislation, serves as commander-in-chief of the state military and appoints members of state agencies or advisory boards. Community Impact asked the three gubernatorial candidates for their perspectives on data centers, education, the cost of living and other topics.

The background: Abbott beat 10 Republican challengers in the March primary election, while Hinojosa beat eight other Democratic candidates to advance to the November election. Dixon was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Looking ahead: Early voting runs from Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
