San Jacinto College launched SJC AlertMe, a free, mobile safety application for students, employees and surrounding community members to stay informed and prepared for emergencies, according to a Jan. 21 news release from the college.

What you need to know: The app, which is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, delivers real-time notifications about weather closures, critical campus updates and urgent safety alerts.

The details: App features include:

Instant emergency alerts for severe weather, closures and safety concerns
Incident reporting with the option to include photos or remain anonymous
Campus maps, emergency procedures and key contacts
Optional location sharing and "Friend Walk" features
