Manvel to hold May election for mayor, City Council seats

Manvel will hold a general election on May 2, with mayor and City Council Place 3 and 5 seats on the ballot for three-year terms, according to city documents.

The details: Three candidates, including two incumbents, have filed for the election ahead of the Feb. 13 filing deadline, according to city documents.

Friendswood ISD introduces new courses for 2026-27 school year

Friendswood ISD junior high and high school students will have the opportunity to take new and updated courses following board approval of the 2026-27 academic planning guides.

The overview: The guides outline courses and requirements for the 2026-27 school year, with several updates proposed across both campuses.

Many of the changes focus on career and technology education, or CTE, while others involve course renaming and program adjustments.

San Jacinto College launched SJC AlertMe, a free, mobile safety application for students, employees and surrounding community members to stay informed and prepared for emergencies, according to a Jan. 21 news release from the college.

What you need to know: The app, which is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, delivers real-time notifications about weather closures, critical campus updates and urgent safety alerts.

The details: App features include:

  • Instant emergency alerts for severe weather, closures and safety concerns
  • Incident reporting with the option to include photos or remain anonymous
  • Campus maps, emergency procedures and key contacts
  • Optional location sharing and "Friend Walk" features

More details: Owned by Carl and Johnette Cadis, the business serves Pearland, Friendswood and Clear Lake, as well as the Galveston area, Carl Cadis said.
