Voters living in Spring ISD boundaries rejected Proposition A in the Nov. 3 general election, with unofficial results showing 54.95% of voters casting a ballot against it.
The overview: The Spring ISD Board of Trustees called the voter-approval tax rate election in August to increase funding for the district. The proposition would have generated $5.6 million in additional local revenue and unlocked $9.9 million in extra state funding. Because the proposition failed, the district's property tax rate will remain at $1.1069 per $100 of home value.
Zooming in: Without the increased tax rate, Spring ISD faces a projected deficit of about $34.19 million. The additional revenue was intended to fund maintenance and operations, including:
Teacher salaries
Utilities
Transportation
Supplies
Classroom needs
The district has already partially addressed its ongoing deficit by closing two schools this year. District officials now plan to focus on listening to community feedback and understanding voter perspectives.
