Greenwood, Van Nest win respective Republican runoff races for Brazos County, unofficial results show

Two Republicans are advancing to the November race in Brazos County for the district clerk and Precinct 2 commissioner seats following the May 26 runoff.

As it stands, neither is slated to have an opponent in November.

All results are unofficial until canvassed at a later date.

What's happening: According to unofficial voting results in the race for Brazos County Precinct 2 Commissioner, Kyle Greenwood received 3,690 votes, or 66.12% of the vote. Jordan Januse received 1,891 votes, or 33.88% of the vote.

Meanwhile, unofficial results favored Wayland Van Nest in the district clerk race with 9,286 votes, or 76.16% of the vote. Incumbent Gabriel Garcia received 2,906 votes, or 23.84% of the vote.

Neither candidate currently has a Democratic opponent set for November.
 

Some context: The candidates faced off in March, but neither obtained a majority of the vote, leading to the runoff.

Bryan-College Station ‘Big 6’ construction updates, May 26-29

The construction of “Big 6” continues with multiple lane closures scheduled throughout the week of May 26 in Bryan-College Station.
What you need to know:

  • May 26-27: Full closure, 8:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.

    • Southbound mainlane between University Drive and Southwest Parkway will be closed, along with the southbound entrance ramps north of University Drive and Harvey Road.

    • The Northbound Texas Avenue exit ramp will be closed for the placement of concrete at 7:30 p.m.

    • Officials recommend rerouting to Texas Avenue by turning left on Southwest Parkway.

  • May 28-29: Full closure – 8:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.

    • The southbound mainlane between University Drive and Southwest Parkway will be closed.

    • The southbound entrance ramps north of University Drive and Harvey Road will also be closed, starting at 7:30 p.m.

What’s next: The Texas Department of Transportation says drivers will have two lanes of access throughout the construction over the next six months. While main lane construction is the focus, crews will also be working on the construction of temporary pavement and retaining walls.

UPDATE: Paxton wins GOP nomination for US Senate, will face Talarico in November

In the May 26 runoff election, Republican voters across Texas cast their votes in a contentious U.S. Senate race between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The context: The Republican race for U.S. Senate is one of several statewide contests that advanced to May runoffs after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary election.

About the candidates: Cornyn, an incumbent senator with nearly 24 years in office, is seeking to hold his seat for another six years while being challenged by Paxton, the once-impeached state attorney general who was recently endorsed by President Donald Trump. The winning Republican candidate will face the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, state Rep. James Talarico of Austin, in November.

UPDATE: Sens. Johnson, Middleton advance to November ballot in Texas AG race

For the first time in more than a decade, there is no incumbent in the Texas attorney general's race as Ken Paxton runs for the U.S. Senate. Voters across Texas made their picks for attorney general in the May 26 runoff election, with the winning candidate from each political party moving on to the November election.

The context: The Republican and Democratic attorney general races are among several statewide contests that advanced to May runoffs after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary election.

The attorney general serves as Texas' top lawyer and law enforcement officer.

About the candidates: On the right, state Sen. Mayes Middleton of Galveston and U.S. Rep. Chip Roy of Austin are each seeking the Republican nomination for the seat.

On the left, state Sen. Nathan Johnson of Dallas and former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski are vying for the Democratic nomination.
