County Road Burger Company eyes expansion

Denton native and business owner Mike Barnett plans to expand County Road Burger Company, formerly known as Denton Independent Hamburger, beyond North Texas.

Barnett, a lifelong Denton Independent Hamburger fan, bought the restaurant in 2018 after the previous owner retired. Denton Independent Hamburger originally opened in 1977.

“I ate there every week for three years of high school,” Barnett said. ”I thought to myself, you know, why isn't there one of these in every town in America?”

What's on the menu: The restaurant offers several kinds of hamburgers, including a chili burger, slathered in Texas chili, shredded cheddar cheese and onion, and a hickory burger, which comes with a dose of hickory barbecue sauce.

Market behind the square offers meats, produce in Denton

Market Behind the Square held a grand opening on Oct. 4, co-owner Lezli Collins said.

In a nutshell: The Market Behind the Square is an upscale meat market, offering several different fresh meats, including wagyu beef, choice beef, pork and chicken, Collins said. The market also offers low temperature pasteurized Jersey Girls milk, and several other animal products and produce.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton recognized for commitment to cardiovascular care

What happened: The American Heart Association recently recognized Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton for their advanced care of patients with heart attacks, strokes and diabetes, according to a press release.

The details: The recognition for heart attack care was based on achievement in the Get With The Guidelines - Coronary Artery Disease program, which focuses on both ST-elevation myocardial infarction and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, per the press release. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton earned STEMI recognition along with several other area hospitals.

The hospital is located at 3000 I-35, Denton, and is also home to the only Level III designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the city.

TWU enrollment, merit scholarship numbers grow

Texas Woman’s University officials announced that the number of students, merit scholarship recipients and credit hours all grew compared to 2024 data.

The overview: The university’s total population in 2025 as of the 12th day of class Sept. 10 was 15,424, according to a news release. The student population grew by a little more than 1% in 2025, which was bolstered by a 4% growth in Texas Woman’s University’s graduate student enrollment.

More details: The percentage of students receiving merit scholarships at the university as of Sept. 10 is 50.6%, compared to 48.1% in 2024.
