PREVIEW: Bryan ISD to approve targeted improvement plans for its intermediate schools

Bryan ISD trustees will hold a public hearing regarding targeted improvement plans for its intermediate schools at its Feb. 23 board meeting.

Items worth mentioning: At the meeting, Barbara Ybarra, associate superintendent of teaching and learning, and Jill Morris, director of accountability, research, evaluation, and assessment, will present to the board the targeted improvement plans for the following schools:

  • Sadberry Intermediate School
  • Long Intermediate School
  • Rayburn Intermediate School
  • SFA Middle School

What's next: The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Bryan ISD Administration Building, 801 S. Ennis St., Bryan. The meeting will also be streamed live on the district’s YouTube channel.

3-point seatbelt mandate to cost College Station ISD $570K by 2029

College Station ISD is preparing to retrofit 19 existing school buses with three-point seat belts to comply with a new school safety law that took effect Sept. 1.

No action is taken during a workshop meeting.

The gist: SB 546 mandates the installation of three-point seat belts on all school buses in Texas; school districts have until Sept. 1, 2029, to fully comply with the new law, Symank said.

By the numbers: CSISD has 120 total buses in its fleet between general education and special education buses and runs 71 routes daily, Symank said.

Looking ahead: Symank said the purchase of 13 general education buses will be brought before the board of trustees for approval in March, and the district will need to purchase an additional 13 general education buses and four special education buses next year.

Pickleball Kingdom coming soon to Bryan-College Station area

Pickleball Kingdom is opening a new location in the Bryan-College Station area and will host more than a dozen courts at the facility.

What readers need to know: While Pickleball Kingdom has hundreds of locations across the United States, this location will be a franchise.

Quote of note: "We're an Aggie-owned franchise, and at heart we're just another small business working to serve our community with fun, fitness and connection," officials with the business said in a Feb. 17 email. "This isn't an out-of-town investment for us. It's home."

Q&A: Meet the Republican candidates for Brazos County Precinct 2 commissioner

Three candidates are competing in the Republican primary to represent the party in November for Brazos County Precinct 2 commissioner.

The seat is currently held by Chuck Konderla, who is not seeking a second term.

What voters should know: The three candidates are Jordan Januse, Kyle Greenwood and Jeff Murski. Currently, there is no Democrat in the running for Precinct 2.

Early voting began Feb. 17, and election day is March 3.

Candidates were asked the following questions:

  • What transportation projects would you like to see the county prioritize?
