Linda’s Electric Quilters provides quilting supplies, education in McKinney

🪡 What started as a way for McKinney resident Linda V. Taylor to pay off the longarm quilting machine she bought to make her handmade quilts, has turned into a multi-building quilting destination. Established in 1995, Linda’s Electric Quilters includes a retail space, warehouse, and studio in McKinney.

The set up: The retail space is stocked with threads, patterns, notions, sewing machine accessories, batting and over 1,000 fabric options. Linda’s Electric Quilters employees approximately 40 staff members, some of whom work in the warehouse fulfilling online orders.

Quote of note: “Quilting saved me mentally. I am able to give that back to people and show the love of what I know and the love of what I learned,” Pearson said. “My favorite thing is being able to connect with someone and see that light bulb go off when they say, ‘Oh, I can do this too!’ To see that happen—there's no better joy in my life, ever.”

Dallas, Houston airports required to reduce operations Nov. 7 under FAA order

Airports in Dallas and Houston are required to begin reducing flights and other operations by 4% on Nov. 7 in response to air traffic controller shortages caused by the federal government shutdown, transportation officials announced Nov. 6.

The details: The cuts will affect 40 "high impact airports" across the country, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration. The affected Texas airports include:

  • Dallas Love Field (DAL)
  • Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) and San Antonio International Airport (SAT) are not required to reduce operations.

How we got here: The restrictions come as the federal government shutdown surpassed the five-week mark Nov. 5, making it the longest shutdown in U.S. history after Congress missed an Oct. 1 deadline on negotiations to fund the government.

Federal employees, including air traffic controllers, are not paid while the government is shut down. This has led to staffing shortages across the country, according to USDOT.
