Plano ISD’s enrollment is down by more than 2,500 students from last school year.

The big picture: As of Sept. 4, the district had 41,303 students enrolled in all grade levels, down from 43,838 in October of last school year, Deputy Superintendent Johnny Hill told the board of trustees on Sept. 8.

PISD’s total enrollment has dropped in every school year since peaking at 55,659 in the 2011-12 school year. 

Why it matters: The district receives state funding of approximately $10,000 per student, depending on student characteristics, Hill said.

“We’ll definitely have to make some adjustments,” Hill said. “We’ll cut back on our expenses accordingly based on the fact that we don’t have quite as many students to educate.”

A new Trader Joe's location is set for the corner of Preston Road and Spring Creek Parkway in Plano.

The details: Construction is expected to start in December and wrap up next July, according to a project filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The Trader Joe's will anchor the new Promontory on Preston mixed-use project, which was approved by Plano City Council in March.

The grocer is known for its unique self-branded products. Trader Joe's also sells fresh produce, snacks, meat, seafood, frozen items, baked goods, beer, wine and flowers.

The city of Dallas approved the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport’s $1.63 billion operating budget during the Sept. 9 meeting.

Fort Worth City Council will vote on the budget at the Sept. 15 meeting, after getting briefed on the proposed budget at the Aug. 25 work session.

The details: Brian Butler, executive vice president/chief financial officer for DFW Airport, said his staff has been working on the 2026-27 fiscal year budget since April. The airport’s fiscal year runs Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2027. The budget breakdown is $820.6 million for maintenance and operations, $801.8 million for debt service and $10 million for board contingency, Butler said.

He said the DFW Airport board approved the budget during its meeting on Aug. 6. The next step is for the owner cities, Dallas and Fort Worth, to approve the budget.

Zooming in: Butler mentioned the growth in passengers has been stagnant, but with the opening of the Terminal A pier and portions of Terminal F opening in the summer of 2027, that number could rise.
