Missouri City proposes funding to evaluate animal shelter operations in FY 2026-27 budget

Missouri City City Council could approve funding to look at its animal shelter operations in the fiscal year 2026-27 budget.

What residents need to know: The funding, which was proposed by Interim City Manager Allen Bogard at an Aug. 10 budget meeting, would provide Missouri City officials with the opportunity to analyze options for animal shelter operations over the next several months before an implementation plan in the new year, city officials announced in an Aug. 14 news release.

The $900,000 figure—which was based on preliminary costs for short-term facility improvements—comes after an assessment of the current Animal Services Building showed deterioration of the facility prompting a need to renovate, replace or contract shelter services.

Also of note: Meanwhile, Missouri City City Council approved a maximum tax rate of $0.578363, a 1.32% increase to the $0.570825 tax rate from the past three years.

Stay tuned: The FY 2026-27 budget and tax rate will be adopted by City Council in September before the new fiscal year begins in October, per the release.

Primoris Services Corp. to join Sugar Land Town Square

Primoris Services Corp., a Fortune 500 company providing infrastructure services, will join Sugar Land Town Square as the development undergoes a $12.5 million redevelopment initiative launched in 2025, officials announced in an Aug. 13 news release.

In a nutshell: The Dallas-based company signed a 25,352-square-foot lease for the eighth floor of Town Square One, per the release. The office location will serve as a new space for its leadership team, said Nataly Torres, a media representative for Sugar Land Town Square and Rebees, its managing company.

Zooming out: The redevelopment initiative—which aims to make the development more attractive to businesses, residents and visitors—includes a refreshed lobby and entry experience at Town Square One as well as a new lobby, upgraded elevator interiors and a centralized suite of hospitality-inspired amenities at Town Square Two.

University of Houston sees 3rd consecutive year of record freshman enrollment

The University of Houston has seen continued enrollment growth as the school nears its 100th anniversary in 2027.

In a nutshell: UH welcomed nearly 7,100 freshmen this fall, breaking its freshman enrollment record for the third year in a row, university officials announced in an Aug. 24 news release. Freshmen also broke a new record with 39,000 applications, a 12% increase from last year.

The university also saw an increase in honors and graduate college enrollment, and students received 18% more merit scholarships than last year.

Zooming out: Last year, college enrollment reached an all-time high in Texas with more than 1.6 million students enrolled, according to preliminary numbers from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

UH was among colleges with enrollment growth last year and broke its record with almost 49,000 students enrolled, according to a 2025 news release. The college also saw all-time high enrollment numbers at its Katy and Sugar Land campuses.
