Where Katy ISD kids can get free meals this summer

Katy ISD Nutrition and Food Services will be serving free breakfast and lunch for children throughout the summer with no sign-up or registration required.

The meals will be available for children 18 and under, as well as those 19 or older with a physical or mental disability who participate during the school year in a public or private nonprofit school program, said Thao Vo, associate director of policy and procurement for Katy ISD.

What you need to know: Select KISD campuses will offer the summer meals Mondays through Thursdays at six locations from late May through the end of July, officials announced in a May 28 news release.

The meals—which must be eaten inside the school’s cafeteria—are available to all children who live within Katy ISD boundaries, regardless of enrollment, district officials said.

Parents are also able to purchase a meal to eat with their children for $3.50 for breakfast and $6 for lunch.

Legacy Park at Katy Court to bring 56-acre nature-forward park

Parkside Capital has broken ground on Legacy Park at Katy Court, which integrates stormwater management with immersive outdoor experiences, officials announced in a May 13 news release.

The 56-acre detention and regional park amenity will serve as the centerpiece of the Legacy Prairie at Katy Court community.

The details: The park, which is inspired by the native Katy prairie landscape, will feature a nature-based playground featuring sculpted play berms, tunnels and sides as well as climbing equipment to encourage exploration, creativity and interaction with the environment, per the release.

Additional park features include:

  • A floating boardwalk and dock
  • Shaded seating areas
  • Interactive educational moments

The park also anchors the planned Legacy Trail system linking the neighborhood to nearby schools and parks.

In their own words: “Legacy Prairie is designed to echo what this land once was,” said Lauren Ferrante, partner at Parkside Capital. “By leaning into native prairie elements and natural play, we’re creating a space where people can reconnect with the landscape that originally defined Katy.”

Harris County renews contract for law enforcement license plate cameras despite resident pushback

Harris County commissioners on May 28 renewed a contract for the Harris County Sheriff's Office's use of license plate readers to assist with criminal investigations. However, more than a dozen residents spoke against the renewal before the court's vote, sharing concerns about surveillance, data privacy and improper use.

What you need to know: Commissioners renewed a $868,975 contract with public safety technology company Flock Safety to continue the use of license plate readers, or LPRs, as well as a sound detection system that identifies sounds such as gunshots, screeching tires and breaking glass, according to agenda documents.

More details: With a June 6 contract expiration approaching, Harris County's four precinct commissioners voted in favor of the renewal with the possibility to revisit the agreement during a future Commissioners Court meeting. County Judge Lina Hidalgo abstained after pushing to move the item to a different meeting to allow for more public discussion.

Some context: According to the sheriff's office, Harris County has approximately 480 LPR cameras, which only capture vehicle information, not biometric data.
