3 candidates running for Allen City Council in May election

Allen voters will see three candidates on the ballot in the upcoming May election.

The big picture: The filing period opened Jan. 14 and ended at 5 p.m. Feb. 13. Three candidates have filed to run for Allen City Council positions in the May election, according to City Secretary Shelley George.

The specifics: Allen Mayor Baine Brooks is completing his final term in the seat and cannot run for re-election based on the city's ordinances for term limits.

Two candidates have filed for the mayoral race:

  • Chris Schulmeister
  • David Shafer

Tommy Baril currently sits in Place 2 and is running for re-election. He is running unopposed. Allen City Council members are elected citywide rather than by a district, and serve three-year terms.

Digestive Health Associates of Texas opens 2nd Allen location

Deepti Dhavaleshwar has relocated her Digestive Health Associates of Texas practice to a new Allen location, according to signage at the location.

The details: The practice diagnoses and treats a range of issues from constipation and diarrhea to colon cancer and ulcerative colitis, its website states. Dhavaleshwar previously saw patients at 981 SH 121, Ste. 1140, Allen, where Yamini Maddala still sees patients at her Digestive Health Associates of Texas location.

“We’ve worked hard to make this transition seamless and look forward to welcoming you to our new office,” the signage states.

Hartwood at Sloan Corners now leasing apartments in Allen

Hartwood at Sloan Corners, a luxury apartment community in Allen, is now open and leasing, according to its website.

The community is leasing a variety of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom floor plans. Hartwood’s community amenities include dog parks, a 6,000-square-foot fitness center, pickleball courts and futsal courts. Apartment amenities include a full-size washer and dryer, stainless steel appliances and walk-in closets.

Hartwood is part of the nearly 500-acre, mixed-use project called Sloan Corners. The project, located at the southern corners of US 75 and SH 121 spanning Allen and Fairview, is being developed by the Billingsley Company.

Construction on the first phase is underway with the second phase expected to begin soon, said Carey Morgan, vice president of marketing at Billingsley. The development’s first phase included construction of Hartwood and Bravo Park, a 3-acre waterfront park.

Candidate filing closes for Allen ISD board election in May

Two incumbents are running unopposed in the upcoming election for seats on the Allen ISD board of trustees after filing closed in February.

The full story: Two seats on the board are up for election in May:

  • Place 6
  • Place 7

Candidate filing closed at 5 p.m. Feb. 13, a district official confirmed.

Board President Polly Montgomery, who currently serves in Place 6, has filed to run for re-election to the same seat, according to Allen ISD’s website. Board Vice President Bill Parker, who sits in Place 7, has also filed to run for re-election in the same seat.

Candidates for the board are elected at-large to serve for three-year terms, according to Allen ISD’s website. Places 6 and 7 were last up for election in 2023.

Dates to know: Election day is May 2, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s website. Early voting will begin April 20 and end April 28. April 2 is the last day to register to vote.

JetBlue Airways to add year-round flights from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to Florida

JetBlue Airways will launch year-round flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

The gist: According to a news release, the largest carrier at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will launch daily, year-round flights to DFW Airport starting March 12, following its initial announcement as a spring break-only service.

Additional daily frequency flights have been added from DFW Airport, running from March 12-23.

What they're saying: “These additions reflect the momentum we’ve built in Florida and our continued investment in Fort Lauderdale as a key gateway in our network,”
said Dave Jehn, JetBlue’s vice president of network planning and airline partnerships.

More details: The year-round flights from Florida to Texas will depart at 8:35 p.m. and arrive at 10:53 p.m, while departures from DFW Airport will leave at 6:15 a.m. and land in Florida at 9:55 a.m.

Afternoon departures will be available during the March 12-23 period, according to the website.
