San Antonio amends Fee Waiver Program for housing, small businesses

In its continued effort to redevelop underutilized buildings and increase the affordable housing stock, the San Antonio City Council voted Dec. 18 to amend its Fee Waiver Program, which provides city and San Antonio Water System waivers for eligible projects.

Two-minute impact: The city of San Antonio Fee Waiver Program provides waivers for city permitting fees and SAWS impact fees for projects in four categories: affordable housing, historic and owner-occupied rehabilitation, small business and targeted industry, according to city documents.

Changes to the Fee Waiver Program include:

  • SAWS Impact Fee Waivers have been increased from a maximum of $250,000 to $400,000 for affordable housing developments.
  • Repairs to fire-damaged residential property may now be eligible for fee waivers.
  • The fee waiver timeline’s approval, renewal and expiration dates have been readjusted to align with the SAWS budget year and to prioritize shovel-ready projects.

Local wine bar brings a taste of Europe to New Braunfels

After traveling to wineries across Portugal, Spain and the rest of Europe, Abigail Porter and Matt Bizer wanted to bring the same flavors and atmosphere back to Texas.

“We always thought New Braunfels needed something like they have over there,” Bizer said.

That’s why Bizer and Porter opened up Favorite Neighbor in July, a wine bar that offers not only tastings but also a sense of community and trying new things.

“We kind of did this on a whim,” Porter said. “But so far, it’s been pretty fun."

Located inside a converted gas station at 494 N. Union Ave., Porter said she wanted to capture a rustic, minimal feel for the bar prior to opening.
