Hutto puts $48 million justice center on the ballot

Hutto voters will decide in November whether to approve a $48 million bond to replace the city’s current police facility, a building officials said has been stretched well beyond what it was designed to handle.

The gist: The department said its 25-year-old facility has become too small to meet the needs of a city that has grown by over 3,500%.

If approved, the bond would fund a new justice center with a 45,360-square-foot police headquarters, a secondary support building and infrastructure needed to access the site.

The impact: The bond would result in an estimated tax increase of about $45 annually per $100,000 of appraised property value, according to the city. For a home at Hutto’s median value of $335,073, that comes to $16.15 per month or $193.79 per year.

Q&A: Weather forecaster James Greenhaw explains effects of El Niño in Central Texas

Central Texas could experience increased moisture and slightly cooler temperatures as El Niño lingers through the fall and winter, Pflugerville weather forecaster James Greenhaw said in an interview with Community Impact.

According to a report from NOAA, there is an 83% chance that this will be the strongest El Niño on record. Greenhaw, who's known as the "Pflugerville Weather Guy" for sharing updates on social media, explained the effects this natural climate pattern could have on the area.

What is El Niño?

The description is hard to exactly say, but it's basically the warming of the Pacific waters west of Central America.

How will El Niño affect Central Texas weather?

In a typical El Niño year, what that does is it brings in more moisture towards the United States, especially toward Texas.

What’s the timeline of El Niño?

December through I would say March [or] April months are going to be our highest chances to see an increased rainfall. Not necessarily flooding, but it can happen.
