Montgomery County approves funding for road bond projects

Montgomery County commissioners approved two new engineering contracts Oct. 14 as part of the $480 million road bond program.

What you need to know: The court authorized a $132,045 agreement with HR Green Inc. for design and engineering services related to a project on Rayford Road at Discovery Creek Boulevard in Precinct 3. The project will add a signalized intersection and left-turn lanes to improve traffic flow and safety, according to the agenda.

What else: In Precinct 1, commissioners approved an agreement with LJA Engineering Inc. totaling about $1.87 million for the Lone Star Parkway expansion from FM 149 to Hwy. 105. The contract will follow a milestone-based payment method, with each installment capped at $1 million until completion.

7 Brew is coming soon to the Harpers Preserve area, according to an Oct. 13 news release.

More details: The drive-thru coffee stand offers a variety of drinks, including lattes, cold brews, energy drinks, teas and lemonades, according to the news release. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, 7 Brew will present a $10,000 check to the Texas Children’s Hospital Woodlands campus.

8 events to celebrate Dia de los Muertos across the Greater Houston area

There are several Dia de los Muertos events going on across the Greater Houston area to honor the lives of loved ones who have died. Here are a few: 

Dia de los Muertos Celebration: Experience Dia de los Muertos at City Place Plaza with a combination of music, food, family activities and culture. The event will feature an Azteca indigenous dance performance, live music, photo opportunities and pop-up craft activities.

Texas Ramp Project celebrating 40 years of building wheelchair ramps

Texas Ramp Project, which builds free wheelchair ramps for those in need across the state, is celebrating its 40th anniversary, according to a Sept. 15 news release. Over its 40 years, the nonprofit has built ramps for over 30,000 recipients with the help of over 3,500 volunteers.

Some context: The organization began in 1985 as the Dallas Ramp Project before being incorporated as the Texas Ramp Project in 2006, according to the news release. Texas Ramp Project provides the ramps to recipients at no cost, according to the news release. Most ramps cost between $800-$900 to build.

What else: In 2024, Texas Ramp Project built 2,727 ramps in 145 counties, according to its Sept. 1 fact sheet. To get a ramp, recipients must be referred by a health care provider or qualified organization via the nonprofit’s website.
