Fort Bend ISD survey shows most ‘neutral’ about 7 proposed elementary closures

A Fort Bend ISD boundary survey showed that nearly half of respondents were neutral about the seven potential elementary school closures, officials shared at a Feb. 9 special meeting.

The breakdown: The survey, which was distributed to parents and stakeholders in January, showed 49% of respondents were neutral across all stakeholders, Chief of Organizational Development Stephanie Williams said. However, the number fell to 43% neutral when looking at those affected by a potential closure.

Meanwhile, overall 34% of all stakeholders were against the closures with the number rising to 49% of those who would be affected by the closures.

What's next: Final elementary recommendations are set to be considered by the board on March 9, Superintendent Marc Smith said. If approved, the implementation process will run from March to August before students begin at their newly assigned schools in the 2026-27 school year.

Houston Fire Department opens new 21K-square-foot facility at IAH

The Houston Fire Department’s newest station—Station 92—is now serving the George Bush Intercontinental Airport after a grand opening celebration was held for the facility Feb. 6.

At a glance: The new 21,000-square-foot fire station is one of three fire stations at IAH. The facility will be staffed 24/7, 365 days per year.

Station 92 has features such as:

  • Six fire-response apparatuses
  • Administrative offices
  • Access to the airport’s airfield
  • Dorms for firefighters to rest

Quote of note: “[This] gives the firefighters the nice facility that they deserve because they're extremely important to the aviation system, because the aviation system is run on trust,” said Jim Szczesniak, the director of aviation for the Houston Airport System. “The passengers trust that we're going to make everything as safe as possible so they have a great journey, and that includes the firefighters here. If [firefighters] have to respond, they can get immediately right up to that runway and rescue people and save lives.”
