The city of New Braunfels is considering using eminent domain to acquire right-of-way for a road project included in its 2023 Bond Program.

What we know: In a 6-1 vote, New Braunfels City Council approved a resolution on Aug. 24 authorizing the use of eminent domain to acquire right-of-way for the Barbarosa Road/Saur Lane Project in the event that land negotiations for 2241 Westmeyer Road are unsuccessful. New Braunfels Mayor Michael French was the single dissenting vote.

City staff have been negotiating with property owners in the area but have been unsuccessful in acquiring the necessary property rights from the aforementioned parcel to advance the project, agenda documents state. The property is owned by Teresa Hudson, according to the Guadalupe County Appraisal District.

The city received an appraisal for the property and sent an initial offer in June 2025. Hudson counteroffered about two and a half times the initial offer, according to the meeting presentation.

Next steps: City staff plan to file a petition for condemnation in September.

CAVA has an opening date for its New Braunfels location.

The update: The fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant is expected to open at 323 Creekside Crossing, Ste. 117 on Sept. 7, CAVA representatives told Community Impact.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be in New Braunfels and continue growing our presence in the San Antonio area,” Lovejoy said.

A growing demand for Christian education is leading New Braunfels Christian Academy, or NBCA, officials to expand its campus, NBCA Head of Schools Nick Reeves said.

“I think there is a growing desire for Christian education,” Reeves said. “As more people have become aware of New Braunfels Christian Academy and as we have grown in what we’re able to offer ... more people want to be part of it,” Reeves said.

What you need to know: NBCA board members finalized the academy’s “first-ever” strategic plan at the beginning of 2023, Reeves said. The plan included the addition of various positions, educational spaces and increased teacher pay.

The second rendition of NBCA’s strategic plan includes an elementary building, fine arts complex, relocated softball field and baseball field.

“Currently, our baseball team has to travel and play and practice elsewhere on local community fields. So, it would be really great to get one on campus that our teams could use and that we could rent out to local organizations,” Reeves said.

The Tanger Outlets in San Marcos will soon add a new beauty supply store, giving customers a new place to buy hair and skincare products.

The gist: The city’s second Sally Beauty Supply location will be located in the outlet mall. Renovations to the business’s new 2,837-square-foot space are slated to begin on Oct. 7 and be completed on Nov. 7, according to a filing from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.

San Marcos features one other business location approximately two miles from the outlet mall.

What they offer: The store sells a variety of beauty products, including hair dye, hair care essentials, hair straighteners and curling wands, nail polish, acrylic nails, makeup, skin care, waxing products and fragrances.
