The Neue developers receive $2.2M for utility improvements

The Neue is on to the next stages of development after New Braunfels City Council approved a $2.2 million expenditure for the mixed-use development project Nov. 24.

The Neue will be a four-story mixed-use condominium development located at 699 W. San Antonio St. in New Braunfels, which aims to further the city’s comprehensive strategic plan, Envision New Braunfels, as previously reported by Community Impact.

The update: Costs include the development of the project and public infrastructure improvements. The improvements will be along Guenther Avenue and San Antonio Street, and include sidewalk, drainage and utility improvements and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant enhancements, Deputy City Manager Jordan Matney said in the presentation to City Council.

The New Braunfels Economic Development Corp., or NBEDC, plans to use the development of The Neue as a way to fulfill other policy objectives, such as walkability, connectivity and the expansion of underground utilities, Matney said. Funding for the project will come from NBEDC ‘s purse, funded primarily by a portion of sales tax.

The Weighted Plate closes after 1 year at new location in New Braunfels

A local bar, grill and live music venue has shut its doors in New Braunfels.

What’s happening: The Weighted Plate officially closed Nov. 22 at 5441 FM 1102, owner Cody Teer told Community Impact.

Teer cited the early November installation of “no parking” signs along FM 1102 and directly in front of the business as the main driver behind the shutdown.

Some context: New parking signs along FM 1102 were installed by the Texas Department of Transportation, not the county, since the roadway is owned and maintained by the state.

Comal County officials said they installed similar “no parking” signs along Country Ridge Drive, a county road adjacent to Blackbird Brims—the business next door to The Weighted Plate.

“The decision was made with safety in mind, in response to what neighbors were experiencing,” said Comal County Public Information Officer Cary Zayas in an email to Community Impact.

Zayas also said the county received complaints from neighbors regarding parked cars near the business blocking the right of way.

Transforming Port San Antonio: Officials hope tech, aerospace hub redevelopment project will launch economic growth

The big picture: Jim Perschbach, president and CEO of Port San Antonio, is working to redevelop the port's Southwest San Antonio campus into a world-class space for aerospace, cybersecurity and defense companies.

With an aim of transforming the former Kelly Air Force Base into a developed research campus that also lifts the fortune of the nearby residents, campus development projects include the Innovation Tower, a defense campus, a military campus, a child development center, a vertiport, grocers, retail and dining options.

The conditions: Perschbach said the port's current economic impact seems improbable because the campus mostly consists of buildings in need of repairs, with the aim of future revitalization.

The outlook: Perschbach's vision for the campus is inspired by Walt Disney World's EPCOT. The campus will showcase the past, present and future through its architectural design.
