New Braunfels City Council appoints new acting city attorney

The city of New Braunfels has a new acting city attorney.

What happened: New Braunfels City Council unanimously appointed Nathan Brown to serve as the city's acting city attorney and removed Davidson Troilo Ream & Garza as the interim firm serving as city attorney following a closed session July 14.

The motion was made by council member Toni Carter and seconded by council member Lawrence Spradley.

City Council will appoint Brown as interim city attorney at a future council meeting in open session, but still retain services of outside counsel on an as-needed basis, as stated in Carter's motion.

How we got here: New Braunfels City Council voted 4-3 to terminate the employment of its city attorney, Valeria Acevedo, on May 11, following a two-hour closed session. The decision came after the city discovered a conflict between the city charter and the Texas Constitution regarding the New Braunfels mayoral race.

The council appointed Davidson Troilo Ream & Garza as the interim firm to serve as city attorney following a closed session May 26.
