Fainmous BBQ looks to relocate, focus on catering after closure

Fainmous BBQ closed its location at Sawyer Yards in The Heights in February. They are currently operating as a catering company until they find a new location, according to the owners.

What happened: In a Feb. 11 social media post, Fainmous BBQ owners James and Karen Fain announced that they were leaving the Heights location after their landlord said they had to pay $72,000 by the end of the week.

“We’re just looking at our options and making sure that when we step out again and find a spot, it’s the right spot, the right people, the right location,” Karen said. “It forced us to build a very strong catering clientele, and that’s what we’re doing now.”

As of March 12, they do not have a permanent location or timeline for when they expect to be in a new building.

  • New location TBD

Houston to receive $9M grant to enhance public transportation for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Houston is poised to host seven matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June. As the tournament approaches, public and private entities are beginning to invest in the city's infrastructure, transportation and public safety sectors.

After it was announced in late February that city officials would apply for $80 million to enhance security at the tournament, Houston is now set to receive a new grant for transportation aid.

The gist: The U.S. Department of Transportation announced in early March that the public transit system across Houston will be awarded a $9.09 million grant through the Federal Transit Administration as part of a larger $100 million investment to improve public transportation for cities hosting World Cup matches.

The grant will help by supporting:

  • Planning, capital and operating expenses for matches and other public events held in the host city
  • Stadium capacity and number of matches
  • Transit agencies to obligate these funds within one fiscal year of the close of the tournament

The funding for the grant will come through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026.
