Plans to bring a Trader Joe’s grocery store to Frisco are under review by city officials.

What to know: Frisco’s Planning and Zoning Commission is set to consider a zoning change at a July 28 meeting for a nearly 10-acre mixed-use development that could be anchored by a Trader Joe’s store.

What's next: A Trader Joe’s grocery store has been proposed for the corner of Majestic Gardens Drive and Main Street as part of a larger mixed-use development, including a senior living facility and open green space. While the area’s current zoning allows the grocery store, the senior living component requires a zoning change.

Toyota expanded its operations in North Texas with the opening of a new building in Frisco.

The seven-story, 242,000-square-foot building is capable of seating 1,000 Toyota Financial Services employees, according to a company news release.

The specifics: The new space is located across SH 121 from Toyota’s North American headquarters in Plano.

The building will offer “much-needed” office space and additional parking, the release states. 

Harry Potter has been confirmed as the theme for the 2026 ice! experience at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine.

The display will feature 10 different scenes inspired by the wizarding world and will use 2 million pounds of ice to create the sculptures and scenes within the resort, according to the website. Each theme also features two-story ice slides and passageways throughout the experience.

The details: This year’s ice! runs from Nov. 13-Jan. 3, 2027, according to a news release. Tickets for the event are available starting at $33.32.

The experience, which is inspired by the Harbin Ice Festival in China, uses more than 300 Harbin-based artisans to create the sculptures, the news release states. The artisans spend about 40 days hand carving 60,000 ice blocks.

On-site, the experience is kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit to preserve the ice sculptures.

With large parts of the state under an extreme heat warning or heat advisory through July 23, the operator of Texas’ independent power grid is projecting record-breaking electric demand this week.

What's happening: As of 3 p.m. July 22, there were 90,027 megawatts of demand on the grid with 113,543 megawatts of power available, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas' real-time supply and demand dashboard. One megawatt of electricity can power about 250 homes during peak times.

This would break ERCOT’s current demand record of 85.5 gigawatts, which was set during an August 2023 heat wave. ERCOT spokesperson Trudi Webster cautioned that this week’s demand records are preliminary.

What it means: Texans should not expect a grid emergency during this week’s extreme heat.

ERCOT previously projected that demand would surpass 92,000 megawatts this summer, due to high temperatures, moderate rainfall and the growth of data centers.

This week's triple-digit temperatures come during the sunniest parts of the day, allowing the state to rely in part on solar energy to power the grid.
