Two candidates will be on the ballot for the San Marcos City Council Place 3 seat in the upcoming Nov. 3 election.​​​​​​​

The details: Candidates Jane Hughson and incumbent Alyssa Garza will be vying for the position. Hughson currently serves as San Marcos Mayor. Candidates Amanda Rodriguez and Ryan Thomason will run to fill her seat.

Q: Why are you running for this position?
Hughson: "I am running to continue my service as a council member. My experience in all aspects of city government provides perspective as we face new challenges. Since most of our council is relatively new, my institutional knowledge will help provide continuity, informed decision-making, and effective leadership as San Marcos grows."

Garza: "I’m running because San Marcos deserves leadership that is experienced, but never complacent. After six years on Council, I know how City Hall works and how much more is possible when we’re willing to challenge old assumptions. I believe local government can be imaginative, courageous and genuinely connected to community."

1. Kyle council approves almost $500K reevaluation of proposed roundabouts: The city council approved a $478,638.51 task order to conduct a traffic study at 12 intersections where roundabouts are recommended.

3. San Marcos council approves $2.19M in airport repairs: The City Council approved an approximately $2.19 million construction contract to rehabilitate pavement and complete taxilane improvements at the San Marcos Regional Airport.

4. Buda council revises business grant program: The City Council approved an amendment to the Downtown Co-Marketing Grant Program allowing businesses to receive up to $1,000 in advance funding for marketing projects.

5. Kyle council no longer considering Kyle Vista Park for animal shelter: The City Council will no longer consider the Kyle Vista Park site for the development of an animal shelter.

For the first time in over a decade, there is no incumbent in the Texas attorney general's race as Republican Ken Paxton runs for U.S. Senate.

Democrat Nathan Johnson, a state senator from Dallas; Republican Mayes Middleton, a state senator from Galveston; and Libertarian Tom Oxford, an attorney from Nederland, are running to replace him this November. Community Impact asked the candidates for their perspectives on Texas' open records laws, state litigation and other topics.

How we got here: Johnson and Middleton each won their primary runoff elections in May, Community Impact reported, while Oxford was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Looking ahead: Early voting in eight statewide races and dozens of local elections runs from Oct. 19-30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
