City leaders and community partners gathered at Lawrence Park on Sept. 24 to break ground on a $2 million renovation, officially launching the construction phase of the citywide Let’s Play Houston initiative.

The local impact: Lawrence Park is the first of 25 neighborhood parks that will be renovated as part of the Let's Play initiative under the Houston Parks Board.

Let’s Play is a public-private partnership that will distribute $60 million worth of park upgrades across all 11 Houston City Council districts. Two to three parks per district were selected for improvements through the citywide program.

About the project: Reconstruction at Lawrence Park will include:

• Installation of a new shaded playground

• Improved paths and park surfaces, including enhanced access into the park and trail connections to the MKT Trail

• A fitness area

• Construction of a paved plaza with seating

• Stormwater detention

Looking ahead: Houston Parks Board president and CEO Justin Schultz said construction will take about one year to complete at Lawrence Park.

The luxury destination restaurant Mack Allen’s officially celebrated its grand opening on Sept. 14. Located at 4400 Post Oak Parkway in Houston, the 16,000-square-foot venue is one of entrepreneur Mack McDonald’s latest fine dining concepts.

What to expect: Mack Allen’s serves patrons an elevated version of American cuisine. The menu, crafted by executive chef Carlos Andrade and regional chef Manuel Viveros, boasts prime steaks and Australian wagyu as its specialties, in addition to seafood and other globally inspired preparations, according to a news release.

Mack Allen’s food options are complemented by a 1,000-bottle wine collection and a robust spirits program.

The restaurant also features an outdoor courtyard garden oasis, a raw bar and three private dining rooms. Reservations can be made via OpenTable, and both curbside valet and self-parking are available on-site.

• 4400 Post Oak Parkway, Houston

Officials with the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County shared a news release Sept. 22 highlighting new expansions and services available to all transit riders.

The improvements span METROLift, curb2curb and Community Connector.

METROLift: Changes to the METROLift, an Americans with Disabilities Act transit service, include new technology, vehicles and travel options. Officials also noted that new vans and minivans will begin to replace aging vehicles and increase capacity during periods of high demand.

Community Connector: The transit authority's electric micro-transit rideshare service known as the Community Connector will become a permanent part of the transit network after officials saw a 64% increase in ridership. The network will now see expanded hours, new climate-controlled vehicles and improved connections.

Curb2Curb: A new route was also announced for the curb2curb service, an on-demand, ADA-accessible neighborhood rideshare service. The 347 Gulfton On Demand Service Zone began operating daily from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. for residents in the Gulfton community.

Voters can prepare for the upcoming election with the following details:

• Early voting begins Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 30, according to the Texas Secretary of State's website.

• Election day is Nov. 3, and polls will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

• Registered voters can cast their ballots at any polling location during early voting and on election day.

DaVita, in collaboration with Bridge of Life, the YMCA and local community partners, will host free health screenings at three Houston-area locations Sept. 24-26.

What you need to know: No appointment or insurance is required, and walk-ins are welcome. The free community event will offer preventive health services, including flu vaccines, dental screenings, food distribution and free haircuts.
