New Braunfels considers increasing solid waste rates due to forecasted financial challenges

New Braunfels residents could see an increase to their solid waste rates this spring due to anticipated revenue and expenditure challenges.

What you need to know: New Braunfels City Council is considering increasing the city’s monthly residential garbage and recycling rate from $17.66 to a $20 flat rate beginning April 1.

The proposal also includes an annual $2 rate increase through FY 2031. The proposed rate adjustment would increase residents' bills by $2.34 monthly and $28.08 annually, according to an Oct. 12 meeting presentation.

Assistant City Manager Jared Werner said the new rate will encompass garbage and recycling.

What they're saying: “When we do get to a recommendation of an updated rate, we do plan on combining the rates,” Werner said. “By our current ordinance, the residential, garbage and recycling rate are separated so we plan to combine those.”

San Antonio International Airport awarded over $43M by the FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, awarded the San Antonio International Airport, or SAT, two grants totaling $43,250,959 on Sept. 25.

The details: The grant will support critical airfield drainage improvements under SAT’s Airfield Safety Enhancements and Improvements Program, or ASEIP. This is the largest single ASEIP award in the airport’s history, Senior Public Information Officer Ana Flores said.

The grant funds will help update and modernize drainage around the airport and expand stormwater capacity, which will ensure SAT meets updated FAA and rainfall design standards, Flores said.

Why it matters: Though it operates behind the scenes, this project is a vital investment in SAT's infrastructure, ensuring safe, resilient and efficient operations for years to come, Flores said. It also aligns with the airport’s broader, long-term development strategy to support San Antonio's regional growth, anchored by the development of the new Terminal C.
