Sugar Land creates Applied Optoelectronics reinvestment zone

Sugar Land officials created a reinvestment zone at onshoring manufacturer Applied Optoelectronics Inc.’s new Sugar Land location.

What residents need to know: At a Jan. 6 meeting, Sugar Land City Council voted 6-0 to approve an ordinance to create the reinvestment zone—an area designated as eligible for incentives such as tax abatements by a governing body, Sugar Land Business Development Manager Jennifer Alexander previously said.

Zooming in: Alexander said the reinvestment zone allows for a county-proposed tax abatement for the project.

Remember this? AOI, the largest domestic optical module manufacturer, received a $2 million incentive from the Sugar Land Development Corp., a city board aimed at economic growth, in July.

What’s next? The new facility is expected to begin services in summer 2026, Community Impact previously reported.

JuiceLand opens 9th Houston location in Sugar Land Town Square

JuiceLand has opened its ninth Greater Houston location in Sugar Land Town Square, officials announced in a Jan. 7 news release.

On the menu: The eatery’s menu is centered around fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies, cold-press juices and wellness tonics, according to its website. Additionally, patrons can enjoy plant-based meals including wraps and bowls.

Looking ahead: The brand is set to open its 10th Greater Houston location at The Shops at Oyster Creek in Missouri City, located at 8225 Hwy. 6, Community Impact reported.

Yark Green Thai Restaurant opens off Mercantile Parkway

Rooted in family recipes and a passion for authentic flavors, Yark Green opened Dec. 12 in Katy.

The restaurant serves Thai rice, curry and noodle dishes, as well as desserts such as mango sweet rice, coconut pandan roll cake and fried ice cream. Additionally, the interior of the restaurant is decorated with warm wood tones, earthy colors and greenery to reflect a peaceful oasis.

The overview: As Community Impact enters its third decade, it’s returning to its roots of growth and deeper reader connections. The “Patron” program, which began in 2020 by reader demand, has relaunched as InCIder.

“This relaunch represents our renewed commitment to readers who support our local news,” CEO John Garrett said. “Beyond funding great journalism, we also want to reward our InCIders and build deeper connections with them, creating a true sense of community around the work we do.”

Event details: As part of the new program, Community Impact is hosting InCIder Hours across the state, events designed to celebrate and engage the company’s top supporters.

Houston’s first InCIder Hour will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 21 at Community Impact’s Houston headquarters, 16300 Northwest Freeway, Jersey Village.

Guests will have the opportunity to network with fellow InCIders, meet Community Impact staff and attend a moderated real estate-focused panel.
