Allen ISD board to consider staff compensation increases in May

Allen ISD officials are nearing the finish line for approving the 2026-27 school year budget with one more factor to consider in May.

What’s happening: Officials intend to bring a 2% compensation increase for district staff to the Allen ISD board of trustees for consideration at a May 11 workshop meeting, said Kyle Penn, assistant superintendent of business and technology. That will be the last “big determining factor” for the upcoming school year budget, he said.

What's next: Board Vice President Bill Parker said he would like to see how a 2% increase and a 2.5% increase would affect the budget. He said he would like it if the board came prepared for action at its May 11 workshop.

“It’s important that our teachers, before they go on break, have an idea of what their compensation package for next year is going to look like,” Parker said.

American Airlines celebrates 100th anniversary

Fort Worth-based American Airlines celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 15.

The first flight for the company was on a DH-4 biplane with a bag of mail, headed from Chicago to St. Louis, according to the airline’s website. Charles A. Lindbergh, the chief pilot of Robertson Aircraft Corporation, was the pilot of that trip. Robertson was one of the airlines that ultimately became American Airlines.

The background: What started as American Airways, the first operation building and hangar was at Fort Worth Meacham International Airport, which was once the headquarters of American Airlines at 201 Aviation Way, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the airline’s historical timeline, the company changed its name to American Airlines, Inc., in 1934.

According to its website, American Airlines operated the first plane to land at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 1974. The headquarters moved from New York City to Fort Worth in 1979 and American established its first hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 1981.

Investigators say Camp Mystic deaths were preventable in hearing revealing timeline of July 4 flood

In the early hours of July 4, 2025, an intense rainstorm pummeled communities in the Texas Hill Country, submerging low-water crossings as segments of the Guadalupe River rose more than 30 feet in 90 minutes. Twenty-seven young campers and counselors died at Camp Mystic, a private Christian girls summer camp located along the river in Hunt.

Those deaths could have been prevented if camp leadership took action sooner or had a written evacuation plan in place, investigators told a panel of state lawmakers tasked with studying the flood response during an April 27 hearing.

Quote of note: “Questions about what should happen next are many, but for me, one thing is clear: This tragedy could have been prevented,” Sen. Pete Flores, R-Pleasanton, said.

Zooming in: Camp Mystic staff had more than two hours to evacuate 386 campers from their cabins, investigator Casey Garrett said.

In violation of state law, the camp did not have a written evacuation plan and counselors were not trained on what to do in an emergency, she said.
