Katy ISD’s Opportunity Awareness Center will have a new home beginning in the 2027-28 school year.

What residents need to know: At a July 27 meeting, the board of trustees approved a $10.22 million construction contract with Anslow-Bryant Construction Ltd. for the district’s new Opportunity Awareness Center building.

The OAC, which is the district’s disciplinary alternative education program, serves students in kindergarten to 12th grade who have broken the Texas Education Code or the district’s student code of conduct, Principal Janelle Coleman previously said.

How we got here: Construction for the new center became necessary after the district decided to expand the growing Miller Career and Technology Center in its former space, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Next steps: District officials said the project is anticipated to begin construction in mid-late August with substantial completion expected by July 1, 2027, according to agenda documents.

Taste of India has opened its doors in Katy, owner Pankaj Jariwala confirmed.

What’s on the menu: The restaurant has several options for customers to try including chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, garlic naan and vegetable samosa, Jariwala said.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council will host a public meeting Aug. 5 for its Safety Action Plans—an effort to improve transportation safety and reduce serious roadway injuries and fatalities, according to a July 27 news release from H-GAC.

Why it matters: The Houston-Galveston region accounts for nearly 20% of traffic deaths in Texas, and every day an average of two people are killed and 10 people are seriously injured in traffic crashes across the region, according to H-GAC’s website.

A closer look: H-GAC is working with local governments, transportation agencies and community partners to identify critical issues and help lead future safety improvements, per the release.

Beginning Dec. 17, Frontier Airlines will offer daily nonstop service from Houston to Puerto Rico, airline officials announced via a July 14 news release. 

The big picture: The new route will run between George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan. With the latest addition, Frontier Airlines will serve 21 destinations from IAH.

In December 2025, the airline added new routes from IAH to three Latin American countries, as previously reported by Community Impact.
