The April 4 Houston City Council special election resulted in two candidates advancing to a runoff for the District C seat.

The results: Candidate Joe Panzarella garnered 33.34% of votes, or 3,131 votes, while Nick Hellyar received 22.54% of the vote, or 2,117 votes, according to unofficial results from the Harris County Clerk’s Office. Because no candidate received more than 50% of the overall vote, a runoff election is triggered.

As of April 5, a date for the election has not been set. The winner of the race will serve the remainder of the term, which runs through January 2028.

ONESweat will open its 10th location in the Houston area.

Meet the owner: Owned by Jordan Strouse, ONESweat offers classes like Heat Signature, a heated mat pilates class that gradually increases the temperature with dry heat to help with muscle recovery and detoxification.

Strouse said experience is a driving force behind the gym’s success from the moment a person walks in and is greeted, to the cleanliness of the facility.

“Sometimes you don’t know what happens in the 26 minutes of class, but you do know how a person made you feel when you came in, you do know if your machine was clean and you know how you feel when you left,” he said. “The things that make the experience happen are our people wanting to do a good job.”

Other classes include high-intensity interval training (HIIT) classes and pilates.

A public-private partnership called Let's Play Houston will distribute $60 million worth of park upgrades across all 11 Houston City Council districts. Two to three parks per district were selected for improvements through the citywide program.

Why it matters: The program is led by Mayor John Whitmire's administration, the Houston Parks Board, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, along with corporate and foundation support. Once improvements are complete, Let's Play Houston will represent the largest investment in neighborhood parks in the city's history, according to a March 31 news release.

What you need to know: A total of 25 parks will be revitalized through the program, a process that will be advanced in phases. As of late March, 11 parks are currently in the design phase, with the other 14 conducting initial community engagement to help develop the scopes of work for the park renovations.

Project officials said more than 40 engagement events were conducted during the initial phase of the process.

Despite counties nationwide seeing a slowing growth rate, the Greater Houston area is experiencing the opposite, per recent data from the US Census Bureau.

The gist: The data examines population changes within the timeframe of July 2024 to July 2025. According to the Census Bureau, the most populous counties saw more births than deaths and more people moving out than moving in from other areas of the country.

However, the Greater Houston area is still experiencing population growth, particularly in suburban areas.

Digging deeper: From 2024 to 2025, the counties saw the following population increase:

• Harris County: 48,695
• Montgomery County: 30,011
• Fort Bend County: 24,163

Three medical cannabis businesses have been conditionally approved to participate in the Texas Compassionate Use Program, state officials announced April 1.

The big picture: The companies received conditional licenses from the Texas Department of Public Safety in an effort to expand access to medical cannabis products. Under the compassionate use program, physicians can prescribe medical-grade, low-THC products to eligible patients in partnership with licensed dispensaries.

Zooming in: Two of the three businesses given conditional licenses April 1 are affiliated with existing medical cannabis dispensaries that work in several other states. The new licensees are:

• GTI Texas, LLC (doing business as RISE Dispensaries) in West Texas
• Cresco Labs Texas, LLC in East Texas
• Texas Medica Collective, LLC in Northeast Texas
