Brewing company opens tasting room in San Marcos

A brewing company founded in 2010 has opened a tasting room in San Marcos featuring its signature Thirsty Goat beer. The business has opened up in the space formerly occupied by Aqua Brew.

The gist: Thirsty Planet Brewing Company, founded by Brian Smittle, opened its San Marcos tasting room in March after almost shutting its doors for good when its previous location on South Congress Avenue in Austin closed in 2023, said Louie Gonzales, distribution manager.

The company has had its beer contract brewed through Austin Beer Works since its near-closure. Strong community support and a desire to pick up in-house brewing led to the tasting room’s opening and return of brewing responsibilities to Thirsty Planet, Gonzales said.

Staying local: The tasting room features a beer garden theme, with a 10-tap draft system and televisions throughout the facility, Gonzales said. Customers can see the brewing process in the facility with free access to the kettles, fermentation tanks and 30-barrel brew house.

Election News
Early voting in Texas’ primary runoff election begins May 18. Here’s what to know.

After dozens of Texas primary races ended without a clear winner in March, candidates for those seats will face off in an overtime round, known as a runoff election, this month. Texans can vote early in the runoff election from May 18-22, with election day May 26.

How it works: State law requires that primary candidates receive more than 50% of the votes cast to advance to a general election.

In the May 26 runoff election, Republican and Democratic voters will choose who they want to represent them in statewide offices, legislative and Congressional seats, the State Board of Education and county-level positions. The winner of each runoff race will appear on the ballot in November.

On the ballot: The statewide Republican runoff races include:

  • U.S. Senate: John Cornyn and Ken Paxton
  • Texas attorney general: Mayes Middleton and Chip Roy
  • Texas railroad commissioner: Jim Wright and Bo French

The statewide Democratic runoffs are:
  • Texas attorney general: Nathan Johnson and Joe Jaworski
  • Texas lieutenant governor: Vikki Goodwin and Marcos Vélez
