Plano first responders to launch whole blood program in July

Plano Fire Rescue is launching a new program in July to bring blood transfusions to patients before they arrive at the hospital.

The overview: The new Whole Blood Program will allow a team of first responders to carry blood to the scene for patients experiencing blood loss to receive a pre-hospital blood transfusion.

Sorting out details: Gamber said the team had to work out logistics and costs before the city could launch the program. He said blood has to stay in a temperature-controlled environment and can be expensive.

The impact: A patient experiencing hemorrhagic shock is 15% more at risk of dying for every minute that passes where they are experiencing severe blood loss, Gamber said.

Solow Garage can stay in Richardson’s Interurban area as city eyes 'edgy' redevelopment

Specialty auto repair shop Solow Garage will stay on Richardson’s Interurban Street as the city aims to transition the area into an “edgy and eclectic district.” City Council unanimously approved a four-year special permit on June 8 that will allow the garage to remain in its current business location, although the city seeks to move the area away from automotive businesses long-term.

The big picture: Property owner Stephen Graham with Simple Development Partners, who recently purchased several buildings and vacant lots on Interurban, supported the garage’s permit as he presented plans to transition the Interurban area from a predominantly automobile-centered corridor into a design district.

Some context: Solow Garage is an authorized BMW collision repair center that has operated in the building under previous owners since 2012.

Quote of note: “I don’t think it’s auto use versus the vision,” Graham said. “If this permit is denied, the building sits vacant—the very outcome the corridor vision is meant to avoid. Vacancy does not create redevelopment.”
