PREVIEW: College Station City Council considering $29M water project, zonings at March 26 meeting

College Station City Council is set to consider a nearly $29 million water infrastructure project, multiple rezoning requests and funding shifts for housing programs at its March 26 meeting.

What you need to know: Among the most significant items on the agenda is a proposed $28.6 million contract tied to the city’s long-term water supply. Council members will consider approving a maximum price for drilling three new water wells.

The discussion: Several public hearings are also scheduled, including zoning changes that could shape future housing and development.:

  • A request to rezone 7 acres from neighborhood residential to urban residentialA request to amend the comprehensive plan and rezone about seven acres near Turkey Creek Road from a neighborhood-focused designation to urban residential, allowing for higher-density housing.
  • A request to rezone 1.24 acres for a planned mixed-use development

Worth mentioning: Two items on the regular agenda involve moving Community Development Block grant funds around to support housing initiatives.

Looking ahead: College Station City Council will meet at 6 p.m. March 26 at City Hall.

US Modules launches solar manufacturing facility in College Station, creating 200+ jobs

A new solar manufacturing facility is now up and running in College Station. Leaders say the project represents both local job growth and a broader push for American resources and manufacturing.

About the company: US Modules will produce solar modules and is expected to bring more than 250 jobs to the Bryan-College Station area. The company is backed by CIG, a company focused on renewable energy development with a goal for reaching 5 gigawatts of renewable power in its portfolio by 2027.

How we got here: Charles Carey, founder of CIG Companies, said Texas stood out as a natural fit for the company’s mission. He said the company wants to create jobs in the U.S. and not outsource overseas.

“Energy dependence is becoming energy independence right here in the great state of Texas. … We will bring back American manufacturing,” Patrick Bisher, CMO for CIG, said​​​​​​.

Simone Biles opens Taste of Gold restaurant at IAH

Olympic gold medalist and Spring native Simone Biles celebrated the opening of her first restaurant, Taste of Gold, at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on March 24.

On the menu: Taste of Gold offers a menu of salads, sandwiches, salads, desserts and appetizers. Biles' favorite menu item, dubbed "Simone's Skewers," is available with chicken, steak, shrimp and vegetable options, per the release.

Quote of note: "As a frequent traveler, I am thrilled to partner with Athlete Playmaker Group to help create a place for people to relax and share meals during their travels through my hometown airport," Biles said in a statement. "Whether you're a fan of gymnastics, football or any sport, or just hungry for something yummy before or after your flight, I'd like to welcome you to Taste of Gold the way fans have welcomed me into their hearts over my career."
