Slightly lower enrollment predicted for Hutto ISD over next decade amid housing market shift

Buyer behavior changes in the Hutto housing market may slow down Hutto ISD's student enrollment growth slightly compared to previous estimates, demographers shared in April.

What you need to know: Paul Cash, a demographer with Zonda Education, the district's demographic firm, shared enrollment projections for the next decade in an April 23 board meeting. Home sales in the area are slowing, he said, but HISD is still projected to grow by several thousand students over the next 10 years.

The details: Cash said lowered home sales in the final quarter of 2025 informed a projected enrollment of 15,264 students for the 2035-36 school year. Prior projections for enrollment—also based on housing activity—previously positioned the district as exceeding 18,000 students enrolled two full school years ahead.

140-year-old Lammes Candies closes Round Rock shop, Austin location to follow

Austin-based Lammes Candies closed its Round Rock storefront April 24, with the flagship store on Airport Boulevard in Austin to follow soon, according to the business.

About the business: Family-owned candy manufacturer and seller Lammes has operated in the Austin area since it opened in 1885, according to the company. The candy company is known for a specialty praline made with Texas pecans as well as chocolates, taffies, brittles and other treats.

What they're saying: The closure comes as the company works to wind-down its operations, and the Austin store will remain open for "a bit longer."
"The decision comes after careful consideration of changing market conditions and the long-term sustainability of our operations," a notice posted for customer view states. "It was not made lightly. Lammes Candies has always been more than a business, it has been a family legacy, and a part of so many lives and celebrations."

Williamson County residential market values dip slightly in 2026

The average market value of homes in Williamson County declined about 3.8% in the last year, according to the Williamson Central Appraisal District. This slight decrease in value reflects continued market stabilization, Deputy Chief Appraiser Chris Connelly said.

By the numbers: Across Williamson County as a whole, the average market value for a home dropped from $473,876 in 2025 to $455,812 in 2026, as of Jan. 1. The market value is the amount a property would sell for in the current housing market.

Homes in the city of Hutto saw the largest decrease, falling 6.08% to an average of $338,519. The city of Leander saw the smallest decline in home values, dropping 2.85% to an average of $465,503.

Something to note: Despite the decrease in average market value for individual homes, Williamson County as a whole saw an increase in its total market value, rising 2.28%. This is because the county’s total market value includes residential, commercial, multifamily and land properties, as well as their improvements, Connelly said.
