Manvel reviews portions of comprehensive, major thoroughfare plan draft

While still in draft form, Manvel's new comprehensive and major thoroughfare plan was presented to City Council at its Oct. 6 meeting.

Houston-based planning firm Kendig Keast Collaborative gave the presentation.

The overview: It focuses on transportation, which includes ideas to change how different roadways are used, as well as land use and community character, which outlines a framework for rural preservation, estate residential, suburban residential, master-planned development, commercial and industrial throughout the city.

The discussion: While council members supported the overall goal of using the major thoroughfare plan as a "growth management tool" for the future, concerns were raised over specific roadway classifications such as Patterson Road.

“I want to preserve history for Manvel, and these trees [on Patterson Road] are history,” council member David Lands said at the meeting. “There’s a lot of great ideas here that I think can get from point A to point B, but my personal preference ... is to remove Patterson from any change to any wider road than it is right now.”

Friendswood City Council hears presentation for 20-year comprehensive plan

By late 2026, Friendswood could implement a 20-year comprehensive plan that integrates hazard mitigation.

What you need to know: Friendswood City Council heard a presentation from Houston-based engineering and design firm Ardurra Group about a proposed comprehensive plan at its Oct. 6 meeting.

Also of note: Part of the reason the plan will focus on hazard mitigation is that it is funded by the Texas General Land Office’s “Resiliant Communities Program” grant, said Lata Krishnarao, practice leader at Ardurra Group.

Quote of note: “Friendswood prides itself on the small-town character," Krishnarao said. “So how are we going to go about [trying] to understand what that character is and how to make sure that character strengthens in the process.”
