Havertys Furniture in College Station closing soon

Havertys Furniture's College Station location is closing soon, according to the signage on the front of the building.

What's new: Havertys will be closing two Texas locations in August, the other being San Angelo.

According to Furniture Today, Havertys President Steve Burdette cited rising import and fuel costs as the main factors behind the store’s closure.

“Vendor import costs are rising, resulting in price increases. Rising fuel expenses for dedicated fleets serving DC to DC and rising fuel expenses at the pumps for home delivery fleets serving the customers,” he said. “These rising costs will impact margins and expenses. However, these costs are factored into our margin and expense guidance.”

Before you go: The store is currently running sales on all types of furniture at different discount rates before the closure.

How Sweet Eugene’s became College Station’s ‘third home’

Long before iced lattes and specialty coffee became commonplace among college students and busy professionals, Sweet Eugene’s in College Station introduced residents to drinks many hadn’t heard about before. More than three decades later, the locally owned coffeehouse remains a community gathering spot where students, families, study groups and longtime regulars all find a place to connect.

At a glance: Known for its signature coffee, pastries, sandwiches and decor, Sweet Eugene’s has been serving BCS since 1993. The coffeehouse attracts people from all backgrounds and serves as a spot for residents and visitors alike to get together and enjoy coffee at a leisurely pace.

Owned and operated by A&M graduate Aaron Brown, his passion for the business and the people of College Station is shown in every cup served in-house and in the drive-thru, but it wasn’t always the direction he thought his life would take.

“It feels like a third home to people, and I think it’s neat that people feel so welcome,” he said.

On the Border shutters all company-owned locations

Tex-Mex restaurant On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina permanently closed all company-owned restaurants in mid-June, according to an emailed statement from OTB Hospitality.

The overview: The company made the decision through an “evaluation of the business,” according to the statement.

“On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has made the difficult decision to move forward with a significant transition in its restaurant operations, which [included] the closing of company-owned locations by end of day Friday, June 12, 2026,” the statement read. “This decision follows a thorough evaluation of the business and was not made lightly.”

The statement added that the franchised locations will remain open.

Some background: On the Border shut its doors in College Station in February 2025.

A news release from Houston-based Pappas Restaurants, the parent company of Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen and Pappasito’s Cantina, stated that the organization purchased On the Border on May 1.
