A variety of different projects are underway in Conroe and Montgomery ISDs, including the construction of new schools. Conroe ISD passed a $1.9 billion bond package back in 2023 and Montgomery ISD passed a $326 million bond package in 2022.

Conroe ISD: Grand Oaks Junior High School
Project: The new Junior High campus will be an addition to the Grand Oaks ninth grade campus set to open in January 2027. Funded by the 2023 bond, the new campus is expected to help relieve overcrowding in the district.

Update: Building construction is progressing on schedule and furniture ordering is in progress for deliveries near the end of the calendar year with the 9th grade furnishings.

Conroe residents and businesses will not see a new stormwater charge just yet.

The City Council did not vote on the proposed fee during its Aug. 27 meeting. Instead, council members asked staff to return with more information about the condition of the city’s drainage system, known problem areas and the projects Conroe may need to fund.

What happened: Consultants with Freese and Nichols presented the latest version of a stormwater utility fee that would appear as a recurring charge on utility bills.
The proposal would charge residences a flat fee of $4 per month.

Nonresidential properties would pay $4 per equivalent residential unit, or ERU, with one ERU representing 3,200 square feet of impervious surface such as rooftops and pavement, meaning 144,707 sq ft impervious area could pay $184.00 per month, according to the presentation.

Why it matters: At that rate, the fee could generate about $4.4 million annually if billing began Oct. 1, according to the presentation. However, the council did not set a start date.

‘Footloose’

‘Silent Sky’ By Lauren Gunderson
Attendees can enjoy a historic play about Henrietta Leavitt, a real-life astronomer who changed the way science saw the scale of the universe. This will be presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatists Play Service.

Two candidates, Kristen Plaisance and Nicole King, will face off during the Nov. 3 election for the seat representing Texas House District 3 for the next two years.

District 3 covers portions of Montgomery County. The seat is currently held by Rep. Cecil Bell Jr., R-Magnolia, who began serving in the position in 2013.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced over $6.3 million in grants for 27 organizations that serve veterans in the Southeast Texas region as part of the Texas Veterans Commission’s Grants Across Texas Tour initiative according to a news release. The TVC is Texas’ state department of veteran affairs. 

Quote of note: “Texans are forever indebted to our brave veterans who selflessly answered the call to serve in our nation’s military,” Abbott said. “These Fund for Veterans' Assistance grants will provide the men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services to improve their quality of life in Southeast Texas and the Coastal Bend area. Our state will always honor our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our nation.”
