Developer plans 53 homes on Wellman Road in Shenandoah

A 6-acre parcel of land newly annexed to the city of Shenandoah is slated for 53 new homes, according to developers Algebra Living LLC.

Envisioned as a boutique, gated residential community, developers said the neighborhood is being designed at a low density to create a walkable, open environment.

What's happening: Hidden Park at Wellman will consist of single-family lots with controlled access, green spaces and neighborhood amenities. Developer Juan Pablo Pelaez said there will be four different models of homes, and presales will be available for people in the area. The developer will look to preserve trees and green space as part of the process as well, he said.

The details: Hidden Park at Wellman is planned with the following specifics:

  • 53 single-family lots

  • Community park, pool and amenity area including pickleball

  • 2,700-square-foot home average

  • 3-4 bedrooms

  • Two-car attached garages

Japanese-style arcade Tokyouth Playhub debuts along Sawdust Road

Tokyouth Playhub, which celebrated its grand opening on June 27, is a Japanese-concept attraction center featuring arcade games, virtual reality games, claw machines and racing simulators, store management confirmed.

More details: Guests can purchase a no-expiration membership card at the venue that can be reloaded with tokens for playtime on any visit.

Based on what guests earn from playing, players can use their winnings as currency to select prizes from Tokyouth’s wall, which includes toys from brands like Sanrio, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z and Pop Mart, store management said.

PREVIEW: Montgomery County to discuss property tax exemptions, road bond update July 9

Montgomery County commissioners are set to discuss 2026 property tax exemptions, the county’s 2025 road bond program and design services for a Montgomery County Justice Center during a July 9 meeting.

What you need to know: According to the agenda packet, commissioners will consider taking action on county ad valorem exemptions for tax year 2026. The item includes homestead, 65-and-older, and disabled exemptions.
The court is also expected to receive the 2025 road bond program financial report. Montgomery County voters approved the $480 million road bond in May 2025 to fund mobility projects across the county.

Also of note: Commissioners will also consider awarding architectural design services for the Montgomery County Justice Center, with a contract to follow.

The court could also approve the creation of new district courts, a county court at law and a probate court.

PREVIEW: Harris County commissioners to address new district courts, infrastructure committee

Harris County commissioners are seeking to appoint Harris County Toll Road Authority Executive Director Robert Trevino to lead a new countywide infrastructure committee aimed at moving county projects forward July 9, as the county also prepares to bring five new civil district courts online.

The breakdown: According to meeting documents, Harris County commissioners will finally review the creation of a countywide infrastructure committee to keep track and create standardized reports for multiple infrastructure initiatives that have been operating under their own committees. Following two rounds of discussions, Carter will bring the recommendation to court for a third time July 9, with Trevino poised to lead the new committee.

Also on the agenda: Commissioners will also hear an update regarding bringing five new civil district courts online as Management and Budget Executive Director Daniel Ramos presents the cost for hiring necessary personnel, such as deputies and court staff. through the end of 2026.

Don Huffines appointed as Texas comptroller

Former state Sen. Don Huffines was appointed as the Texas comptroller of public accounts, Gov. Greg Abbott announced July 2.

Huffines, a Dallas-area native with a bachelor's degree in business administration in finance from The University of Texas at Austin, will take over as the state's finance and budgeting officer from acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock. Huffines will officially begin his service Aug. 1.

Huffines defeated Hancock, who became acting comptroller one year ago, in the March Republican primary. He'll now face former state Sen. Sarah Eckhardt in the November general election for a four-year term.
