Celina commission considers updating landscaping regulations to conserve water

Celina’s landscaping could be getting a makeover as city officials consider new regulations intended to conserve water.

What's happening: The Celina Planning and Zoning Commission discussed possible changes to multiple areas of the city’s code, including ordinances regarding zoning, subdivisions and engineering design standards, at a June 18 meeting.

The discussion: Commissioners favored different regulations for commercial and residential areas, and staff is also working to define potential exceptions for areas like sports fields or parks where turf serves a distinct purpose, McAfee said.

In similar news: Celina City Council recently approved new design guidelines prohibiting turf in future medians, and the city enacted Stage 2 water restrictions July 2 as the peak summer season stretches the city’s water supply.

Metroplex Gymnastics sets August opening date for location on Aubrey, Celina border

Metroplex Gymnastics plans to open its Celina location on Aug. 3, a company representative confirmed.

What they offer: The location will offer gymnastics, tumbling and ninja classes for children ages 2-18. Metroplex Gymnastics also hosts special events like summer camps and birthday parties, according to the business’s website.

One more thing: Metroplex Gymnastics has also updated the address for the facility, which is located on the border of Aubrey and Celina, the representative said.

Upcoming projects

1. Frisco Street roundabout additions

Project: Four roundabouts will be added along Frisco Street at Technology Drive, Sports Village Road, All Stars Avenue and Research Road. The intersections will be converted from intersections to multilane roundabouts.

Update: The project is in the design phase with bidding for construction expected early next year.

  • Cost: $12 million

2. Spring Creek Corridor Intersection Improvements

Project: New turning lanes, concrete pavement, barrier free ramp reconstruction, sidewalk replacement and signal modifications will be added along Spring Creek Parkway at Jupiter Road, Chase Oaks Drive, Ohio Drive, Preston Meadow Road and Parkwood Boulevard.

Update: The design phase is complete, said Clay Lipscomb, Plano community investment project engineering manager. Construction is estimated to start in 2027.

Frontier Airlines adds previous Spirit Airlines route from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport

Frontier Airlines announced it would add eight new routes that were previously operated by Spirit Airlines.

The details: One of the new routes, which started July 5, connects Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in New Orleans.

There will be daily flights to and from DFW Airport, out of Terminal E.
