City of Austin delivers proclamation amid Peace Family Housing Project’s groundbreaking

Peace Lutheran Church is developing a $1.2 million transitional housing facility in Northwest Austin to expand resources for families facing homelessness, food insecurity and instability in the community.

Peace Family Housing Project, along with its nonprofit partners HomeAid Austin and Foundation for the Homeless, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the project on June 9.

Learn more: The facility will include four apartments, which can house a maximum of six families at a time for a 30-90 day stay.

In addition to housing, families will also receive help with case management, limited financial assistance and connections to community resources for services such as mental health care, said Monte Osburn, executive director of Foundation for the Homeless.

The new housing project is only the second of its kind in the region, according to Lynne Williams, executive director of HomeAid Austin.

183 North Mobility Project
Project: The project features two express lanes in each direction on US 183 and a new general-purpose lane.
Update: Crews are working to complete concrete surface grinding and paving along the main lanes at night throughout the summer.

  • Cost: $612 million

  • Funding source: federal funding, toll revenue bonds

Burnet Road Mobility Program
Project: The project will feature updated traffic signals, improved crossings, trail connections and more on Burnet Road from White Horse Trail to US 183 (C2), Bright Verde Way to MoPac (C3) and US 183 to Bright Verde Way (C4).
Update: C2 and C4 construction began in March. 

  • Timeline: 2026-28

  • Cost: $12 million (C2), $29 million (C3), $23 million (C4)

  • Funding source: 2016 Mobility Bond

Loop 360 at Courtyard Drive/RM 2222
Project:
The project will RM 2222 at Loop 360. 
Update: A left-lane closure at the northbound Loop 360 exit ramp to RM 2222 is ongoing. 

  • Timeline: 2026-29

  • Cost: $68.4 million

  • Funding source: Austin 2016 mobility bond, TxDOT

Round Rock ISD to offer free summer meals at 8 campuses

Round Rock ISD will provide meals to children under age 18 this summer at participating campuses through a U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded program.

What you need to know: Under the Texas Summer Meals program, no form of ID is required for children to receive meals from participating schools. Meals can also be provided to people with disabilities under 21 years old through the program.

What else? Meals must be consumed on-site, and participating families will not be required to apply or register for the program—all they have to do is show up during distribution times, according to the district. Meals will be offered free of charge to area children at the following campuses on varying schedules through July 31.

 
Travis County Coverage
Travis County unveils 5-year plan to expand youth mental health services

The breakdown: Travis County officials released a strategic plan May 19 aimed at strengthening mental health services for children and youth. Twenty-eight young people died by suicide in Austin last year.

The plan targets barriers that prevent families from accessing care, including high costs, provider shortages and lack of services in outlying areas, according to a summary document presented at Travis County Commissioners Court.

By the numbers: Integral Care, the local mental health authority, served 25,339 residents in 2025 and responded to 108,405 crisis calls.

The county invested $14.1 million in mental health services in fiscal year 2025-26.

What's next: Strategies include expanding school-based mental health services, utilizing mobile clinics, expanding telehealth and creating a roadmap to help families navigate the system.

Kids Living Well, a coalition of member organizations, will implement the plan through 2031.

Recreation spaces, apartments: check out 5 major Austin-area permits filed this week

A new apartment complex in Bee Cave, an EMS station in Bastrop and improvements to the Graham Middle School athletic field are among the five most expensive projects filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in the Austin metro this week.

1. Twin Oaks Ridge ($29.5 million): Twin Oaks Ridge is a privately funded, $29.5 million mixed-use and leasing development spanning 175,000 square feet.

2. Leah Ave Industrial Building ($18.5 million): This project involves the construction of an 87,306 square-foot ground-up industrial building.

3. New EMS Station for Bastrop County ESD ($2.5 million): The project will consist of an approximately 6,000 square-foot single-story metal building consisting of apparatus bays, day room, kitchen, fitness room, living quarters, restrooms, and associated site amenities.

4. 24 Indoor ($2.3 million): This project is a 20,898 square-foot Interior renovation to create an indoor recreational facility geared towards children.

5. Grisham MS Athletic Field and Field House ($1.98 million): This project involves the conversion of an existing practice field to artificial turf.
