Keller ISD board announces criteria for campus consolidation, requests missed school day waiver after Winter Storm Fern

Keller ISD Superintendent Cory Wilson announced the criteria for the district’s campus consolidation plan at a regular board meeting Feb. 25.

In a nutshell: Wilson said the Long Range Planning and Citizens Bond Advisory committees met Feb. 24 to finalize the guidelines for the district’s campus consolidation plan. The committees plan to consider the following guidelines:

  • Districtwide grade alignment and configuration
  • Campus occupancy and utilization rates
  • Conditions of district facilities
  • Cost of bringing facilities to compliance
  • Transportation
  • Limiting the amount of staff and student disruptions

“We have to look at how much disruption do we truly want to do while accomplishing our overall goal of realizing savings and become more efficient in the operations of the schools,” Wilson said.

Also of note: Keller ISD officials are requesting a missed school day waiver after four days of school and facility closures during Winter Storm Fern.

9 Ounce & Somm to bring wine, whiskey, cigar lounge to Fort Worth

Ana Stull is turning a dream into reality with 9 Ounce & Somm, a specialty wine and whiskey bar located in north Fort Worth.

The Haslet resident said she plans to open the bar, which will feature a cigar lounge, this summer. Fort Worth officials approved a permit Feb. 20 to allow Stull to finish the interior build-out.

The details: 9 Ounce & Somm will have beer, cocktails, mocktails and a small bite menu, an ode to her month’s heritage from the Basque Country in Spain. She said she plans to offer more upscale bar food.

The business name is based on a 9-ounce wine pour, is a play on the word sommelier—a wine steward—and shows that the business offers more than just wine.

“I want it to be a nice, relaxing place that you can go hang out with your friends at the end of the day and or a place that is just right around the corner,” Stull said.

The Fort Worth City Council approved more than $14.5 million for water line, sanitary sewer mains replacement and storm drain work during the Feb. 10 meeting.

The work is occurring in Districts 7 and 10, the latter of which is represented by Alan Blaylock.

The details: Most of the funding, approximately $13.3 million, will come from the available PayGo fund. The remainder is covered by the 2023 drainage revenue bond series, according to city documents.

The work in Council District 10 will happen near the water storage tanks on North Caylor Road.

What else? A 6.1-acre tract of land was rezoned from one-family residential to light industrial at 14271 Old Denton Road, which is in Council District 10.

The applicant, Ben Alali, has proposed using the land for RV storage with a small office space for site management, with warehouse/indoor storage and outdoor storage with covered parking.

Data: Over 300 companies move headquarters to Texas in 9 years

Texas attracts dozens of company headquarters to the state annually, with at least 314 businesses moving their main office to Texas from other states between 2015-2024, data from the governor’s office shows.

Zooming in: At least 24 companies moved their headquarters to Texas in 2024, with more than half landing in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Two companies relocated from other countries, with data center developer Hive Digital Technologies bringing its home base from Canada to San Antonio and pharmaceutical company IntraBio Inc. moving its headquarters from the United Kingdom to Austin.

How we got here: State officials and experts said Texas’ economic incentives and light regulatory environment are key reasons why companies brought their operations to the state in recent years.

“Texas wants companies to move here, and [company leaders] know that,” Megan Mauro, interim president and CEO of the Texas Association of Business, told Community Impact. “Our legislative policy is really impacted by the voices of employers here.”
