Meet the candidates for U.S. House Texas District 38

Jon Bonck, Melissa McDonough, and Alex McMenemy are the three candidates running for U.S. House Texas District 38 in the Nov. 3 election. 

What you need to know 

Early voting begins Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 30, according to the Texas Secretary of State's website. Election day is Nov. 3 and polls are open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
 
Registered voters can cast their ballot at any polling location during early voting and on Election Day.

Blueberry Batting Cages is now open in Tomball

Blueberry Batting Cages is an indoor baseball and softball training facility that has recently relocated to Tomball this past August. 

Two-minute impact: Owned and managed by Jim Squires, Blueberry Batting Cages moved from its previous location in Houston to its new facility in Tomball. Squires said an aspect that makes his batting cages unique is that he offers free practice tunnels for customers with no sign-up needed.  

Their batting cages come with token-operated pitching machines that are available to book online by the half or full hour. Blueberry Batting Cages also offers lessons starting at $60 for half an hour for any athletes interested in improving their fundamentals at any skill level.

Blueberry Batting Cages also offers an individual or family plan membership option for any long-term customers that includes multiple tokens for the pitching machines. The membership starts at $85 for an individual and $136 for the family plan, which applies to two family members.

Houston Audubon renamed Birds Houston

The Houston Audubon Society, founded in 1969, has renamed itself Birds Houston as part of a broader effort to clarify its mission and modernize its identity, according to a release from the organization. The organization also unveiled a new logo featuring the Yellow-throated Warbler, a longtime symbol tied to its conservation history.

What you need to know: The name change is intended to make the organization’s work more immediately clear, including protecting birds and their habitats, conserving critical land, providing education and nature experiences and advocating for conservation policies, the release states.

Also of note: The new name comes ahead of the eighth annual Houston Bird Week, scheduled for Sept. 19-26, with registration opening Sept. 1 for events across the Greater Houston area.

Texas senators weigh impact of driverless vehicles amid recent state regulations

Since late May, all autonomous vehicle companies have been required to receive authorization from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles to operate on Texas roads. During an Aug. 25 hearing, state senators heard the first testimony on autonomous vehicle safety since the new regulations took effect.

The overview: To date, the DMV has received 42 complaints about driverless vehicles, officials said.

No complaints have led the agency to suspend or revoke an autonomous vehicle operator's authorization. That occurs "when the operation has resulted in or is likely to result in serious bodily injury," according to Corrie Thompson, who leads the DMV’s enforcement division.

Zooming in: Lawmakers said they wanted to ensure driverless vehicles were not rolling out too quickly, adding that they they hoped the vehicles would help address Texas' high rate of fatal crashes.

Lt. William White, who leads the Austin Police Department’s highway enforcement division, said first responders have seen consistent issues with AVs, including when a Waymo blocked an ambulance for about 28 seconds following the deadly March 1 Sixth Street shooting.
