New solar-powered benches installed at Cibolo H-E-B fishing pond

A new amenity has been added to the fishing pond adjacent to H-E-B in Cibolo.

What happened: In November, two solar-powered benches were installed at the pond, located at 824 Everyday Way.

The benches are part of a Cibolo Partnered Trailways Project that aims to add amenities to the H-E-B trail and pond, according to Cibolo City Council agenda documents.

Along with the benches, the project added an aeration fountain system to the pond. According to agenda documents, the system will preserve the health of the fishing pond.

Cost details: The total project cost was $114,000, with $94,000 coming from a portion of 2024 bond funding for park improvements and $20,000 provided by a grant from the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative, or GVEC, according to agenda documents.

NBU begins work on $7M sewer line project in Historic Gruene

New Braunfels Utilities, or NBU, is about to begin work on a $7 million wastewater project in Gruene's Historic District.

About the project: The project will be carried out in two phases. It aims to provide the capacity needed to serve the area today and the ability to handle the area’s future growth, according to a news release.

Phase 1 construction focuses on replacing the aging, 12-inch sewer line along Gruene Road—from Hunter Road to the 1200 block of Gruene Road—with an 18-inch sewer line. Phase 1 construction is expected to commence in January and wrap up in March, according to the release.

Nearly 5 years after Uri, ERCOT says Texas power grid will be stable this winter

The Texas power grid is expected to hold up this winter, officials with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said Dec. 9. This is due in part to “tremendous supply growth on the ERCOT grid,” ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas said, amid an influx of data centers coming to the state.

The overview: Since last winter, over 11,000 megawatts of generating capacity have been added to the ERCOT grid, Vegas said. That growth, which largely comes from battery storage and solar facilities, could be used to power about 2.8 million homes during periods of peak electric demand.

Zooming in: Under most weather conditions, there is a less than 2% chance of a grid emergency through February, ERCOT found.

However, Texas could be in trouble in the unlikely event that a repeat of Winter Storm Uri hits large parts of the state this winter, although ERCOT noted that the probability of such a severe storm happening again was "well under one percent." The February 2021 freeze devastated an unprepared power grid, resulting in nearly 250 deaths.
